Okay, so @Jess and @CrazyDaughter and I were talking about cleaning tasks that we always forget and the million fucking filters humans use. So now I'm making a thread for spring cleaning because I don't want to forget all the various tasks that really should get done on a regular basis but don't. Also, let's talk about our own cleaning rituals, cleanliness, clutter and more! What's the messiest thing you've cleaned? What is something you can't stand being dirty?

Coop's spring cleaning list (I'll add more later):

  • Fridge filter
  • AC filter
  • Dryer / washing machine filters + dryer flexible pipe
  • Oven

I don't really have any cleaning rituals, they're more of 'things I guess I really should do'. Example:

If my sheet comes out from under the end of my mattress I need to tuck it back in before I get in bed; I can't stand sheets flying all over the place.

I guess I have a cleaning list that should be done at some point.

2 closets full of random things that my mom decided to ship to me, even though I said not to.

Clean the dog poop from the back yard. I think my old roommate wants to have the back yard redone and, the bushes removed from the from yard and replaced with cacti.

There are like 20 boxes in the garage lined up against the wall that roommate left for me to clean up..those are really annoying, and also need to go!

I forgot flipping/spinning mattresses. We did it last night when I remembered (spin in the spring and flip in the fall.)

I imagine that would get painful after a while.

This pillow top mattress can not be flipped.

Also it took me about 5 minutes to figure out that Amethyst's list meant he had everything to do.

We also have a pillow top. We spin it in the spring and switch it with the guest bedroom mattress (also pillow top) in the fall. Or closeish, because I forget. Before that, I just spun it twice a year.

With enough determination and lube, anything is possible.

This thread came at a perfect time. I'm turning the house upside down because my brother's coming to visit. I've been using the guest room as my hoarding room, so it's horrendous and smells like it hasn't been aired out in a long time.

Filters:

I need air filters and I use the carbon sheet filter over the actual filter because changing air filter filters is bloody expensive otherwise.

I also have a few water filter jugs, the Brita ones.

My vacuum cleaner has one of those HEPA filters. I changed it a few months ago after I vac'd up a set of diatomaceous earth and wrecked the filter.

Even though I'm a magpie hoarder, clutter makes me go absolutely insane. I go through sporadic bouts of throwing tons of stuff away and swearing to live a minimalist life, but I don't have enough motivation to see that through. The worst thing about where I live is that 'donations' are supposed to be new not second hand. The times I've tried to donate anything, I've been met with 'Are you kidding me???' stares. So I end up throwing away a lot of stuff that is still usable, just not useful to me anymore. In the midst of that, a bloody centipede decided to slither out from guest room and make a beeline for me. I ended up smashing it to make sure sure sure that it was dead. I got stung once, not letting that happen ever again! Today I tried to smoke out the room by burning scented sticks, I have no idea if that worked but it sure did get rid of the musty smell.

I have no idea what the messiest thing I ever cleaned was. Probably the time when our city got flooded and everything on ground level sat in mucky water for two weeks. That was over a decade ago and thankfully I can barely remember any of it. I do remember trapping quite a few water snakes and chucking them out of the house though.

Ohhh I've been talking about spring cleaning a LOT lately.

My dog sheds EVERYWHERE and drools on EVERYTHING so I need to do a thorough cleaning.

On top of that I need to wash my walls

clean my windows

put away the last of the christmas stuff (i know I know, it's been stuck in the frozen earth though)

paint my office

deep clean the couches

steam my floors

How do you wash your walls? Every time I try, I end up with streaks of grey on my walls. And they're cream so I gave up trying to clean them altogether. They ended up looking worse than before I tried :(

It depends what kind of paint is on your walls for sure.

It varies with what is on my walls that is making them dirty or if it's just a general clean but usually I just mix some vinegar with warm water and use a cloth that is not too abrasive.

If the walls actually have stuff on them I think needs something stronger I add some detergent that helps, I also find magic erasers are helpful =)

Thanks, @Padme! The walls are driving me up the wall so I'll give these recommendations a shot :)
