Canada is set to be the first G7 nation to legalize marijuana... this is equivocal to when alcohol ended many decades ago.

Medical marijuana has been federally legal in Canada for quite a while now with sources coming from licensed producers.

This emerging industry is something unlike we have seen on this scale with it projected to topple alcohol sales in our country.

Different provinces are taking to it differently and on a whole the entire country is being looked to by other nations as a blueprint for their own legalization plans.

Canada already exports marijuana to a number of nations with deals involving Australia, Germany, Italy, Greece and more.

So, this begs the question(s):

How do YOU feel about the taboo around weed lifting?

How is it perceived where you live?

Do you think it should be legal?

Marijuana was given to us by God. It should be legal.

LEGALIZE IT!!!

it's legal here, although still not federally legal so certain employers can still drug test and fire you over it (my fiance's business works of federal contracts so he gets drug tested).

It's brought in an insane amount of money to our state which is amazing and a lot of it is going towards schools!!

It's been nothing but good here, and we have so much excess weed that it's super cheap now lol.

Legalize it. People are smoking it plenty without it being legal anyways.

I'm already stuck with tobacco smokers blowing their exhaust in my direction and at least pot smoke isn't going to give me cancer.

Just checked the rules. Only things that are illegal aren't allowed on site. If I am a qualifying State medical patient, but the action is Federally illegal, would I be allowed or disallowed to post pictures?

The idea that marijuana would topple alcohol is a bit of a stretch. Admittedly, alcohol sales will probably drop as a result of broad legalization, but folks generally fall on a spectrum of intoxicant choices. But the smart alcohol distributors definitely see this train coming and the REALLY smart ones are diversifying their portfolios.

As a counter case, though you can consider Colorado (taken from an article titled Beer Industry Could Lose $2 Billion From Legal Marijuana)

So far the fears of declining beer drinkers may be just that: fear. In Colorado, 2016 taxes received by the state on alcohol sales actually increased between January and November. Beer tax receipts climbed 4.5%, spirits rose 4.0% and wine increased 3.3%. Tax receipts did decline in the months of April, July, September and October for each of the alcohol categories. It's possible that on certain occasions like 4/20 and the fourth of July, consumers switch to cannabis, but overall alcohol is thriving in Colorado.

So the US is finally coming around on this topic as a whole, but changing the rules takes for-goddamned-ever. And while the rules have been slowly changing, Canada comes right in and takes on Federal legalization, which was ballsy AF.

Canada is getting an early crack at international distribution deals while US firms can't even send product from one legal state to another (which is currently causing an oversupply in the green triangle)

One way or the other, marijuana should be regulated for quality and safety... and as an intoxicant and modifier of brain chemistry, it should generally be kept out of the hands of minors (with most research I've seen indicating that 25 is probably a best case scenario for preventing stunting of brain development). I'd also completely decriminalize the possession and usage, but acknowledge that it's inevitable the State will find a way to punish MJDUI.

Weren't people in Colorado complaining about the weed stank when it was legalized there? I'm gonna be suffering Big Time when it's legal here :^) It's so fucking stinky

But I mean hey sure whatever, go for it as long as you aren't high and driving and endangering other people

It's more political than anything else but dressed as some kind of moral deterrent. These are the hurdles we face on the road to legalization.

  • Alcohol and cigarette industry won't allow new vices to get a piece of the market.

  • DEA makes a large chunk of its money from civil forfeiture, i.e. seizing cash and property from someone with or without charging them with any crime. This can be as subjective as taking someone's cash because they "smell weed" but sending them on their way because there's not enough evidence to charge them. But keep the cash anyway. And to make the punishment worse, MJ is listed as Schedule I, on the same level as heroin, LSD, ecstacy. For reference, Schedule II consist of lesser drugs such as cocaine, meth, oxy, fentanyl, sweet sweet adderall.

  • The private prison industry relies on a steady flow of inmates to produce goods for as low as $0.23 an hour. A good chunk of these people are in for non-violent drug charges. They lobby against legalization so they don't lose their source of slaves workers.

  • The War on Drugs has made crime especially lucrative. Cartels have an interest to use whatever means they can muster to keep mj illegal so the price stays inflated.

  • Drug makers such as those that produce prescription painkillers repeatedly deny the benefits of mj so they can continue to push opioids

"You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities," Ehrlichman said. "We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."

Hopefully as decriminalized states rake in the money, the ones that will be left behind will come around. No amount of conservatism can fight the almighty dollar.

Illinois is trying to pass a fun workaround where anyone with a valid prescription for an opiate painkiller can take that to a dispensary and immediately begin an alternate pain management plan while their medical cannabis application is processing

I can't wait for it to be legalized. It's not like it's stopping me now but it'll be nice to not worry about it. I don't even drink or smoke cigarettes, weed is pretty much all I've got because it's the only thing that doesn't destroy my health but still allows me to unwind and have fun. BlAzE iT

It should be legalized. But I also have the radical opinion that all drugs should be decriminalized at the least, or just flat out legal.

MJ's meant to be one of the few things that helps with my particular medical condition but it's illegal here so lolllll

I would be OK with it being legalised, I don't mind being selfish

Oklahoma just passed medical marijuana.

I think it should be legalized everywhere for recreational use.

A ton of people thought Colorado would be ruined when they legalized it, and it's done nothing but help.

I don't care if it's legal or not. I personally don't like being around super high people irl, but it's easy enough to avoid.

Recently learned my epilepsy is far worse than we thought - aka "intractable" like our law requires - and I just so happen to see one of the few doctors in Texas who can prescribe MMJ. When I brought it up at my appointment last week, she seemed genuinely sad to have to tell me "it's not nearly strong enough". It doesn't even really have to be that strong, which is nearly the most frustrating part. I dream of having more non-addictive, safe options to treat my epilepsy and chronic pain. Conservative states like mine are just too afraid of pissing off their voters to do what's right. I'm really happy to see Oklahoma doing what Texas hasn't - hopefully we can take note.

I'm sorry to hear your health conditions are so much worse and have progressed. I know you've dealt with a lot. And that really sucks. :( I agree it is frustrating.

Me too, but that’s because I’m a cranky grandma.

It’s basically already legal here, they just need to make it official. I have a couple friends who religiously smoke weed and they’re pleased about it. But it doesn’t effect me so I don’t really care. I was never unable to smoke weed the twice a year I do because it’s illegal. Nobody here really cares about weed, tbh. #vansticky

Well I think we all know my opinion on this.

Medical marijuana and recreational marijuana are both truly great.

There are some awesome CBD websites in the US. I wonder if you'd be able to get it that way! Epilepsy is a hell of a condition to deal with :(

Hell yeah, allow that shit! Legal means more research which means more treatments and more knowledge.

I too don't really like being around super high people, but as long as they're not smoking in my face, hey, go have fun!

How do YOU feel about the taboo around weed lifting?

Pretty good, it's just a plant.

How is it perceived where you live?

It's legal here, and I love it.

Do you think it should be legal?

Yeah. I don't really have an argument against it.

In my country. Marijuana is still illegal and you can go to jail if you use it.

I don't use it tbh. But for me. I want it to be more legal for medication purpose. Like there are certain sickness, conditions and illness that only marijuana can heal. So that would be nice.
