i suggest sygate firewall as opposed to zonealarm, it uses less resource and is free

I reccommend http://virusscan.jotti.org/ . It's an online virus scanner, where you upload a file and it scans it with around 20 virus scanners.
I use it with every sus file.

havent had an AV or firewall for about 3 years now, no problems yet

I've found AVG to be the best free firewall (had Avast! but it had problems)...
I used to use Zone Alarm Free Firewall, but then I discovered COMODO Personal Firewall, which is free and allows for much greater configuration the ZA Free.
