that depends on the crime - prison has many uses for many crimes and that's sometimes the problem - in that it rarely works for any of the reasons it's there.

for example,

for some crimes it's there to protect the public by removing someone from society
it's there to deter people from commiting crimes
in theory it's there to re-habilitate some offenders - however I'm not sure of the effectiveness - certainly in this country where the overcrowding is such that the staff to prisoner ratio can't possibly be a beneficial environment for rehab

I think that if re-hab is the main aim then it would be better to have courses and rehab centers instead of prisons for certain crimes

but sadly we live in a world where people want punishment to be exacted for a crime commited and few people want the criminal to be given anything other than punishment

(my 2p worth)

Actually I think the purpose should be to take them off the streets to prevent them for doing even more crimes to harm people...

But other than that it should be to rehabilitate someone... because if it's just a punishment who's to say they won't do it again as soon as they get out? Some people are just that stupid... or mentally ill..

I think prison is for both, in prison they have the time to think over their crimes, they think about their crimes because their being punished by being in prison. I'm not too sure for how much sense that makes for you guys... So I think its both... they deserve to be in prison, but prison also helps them by keeping them off the streets for at least some time.

Punishment I would guess.
The main point of prision is to be punished for you'r actions.
-But I've actually watched a few minutes of a show where people
have 'reflected' and talked about their crimes. So in a way ,
both.

Both, punishment in the sense to make people pay for there actions and discourage would be criminals and rehabilitation in the sense that they can think over there crimes and have a chance to change

Rehab for minor offenses, punishment for severe cases and protection of society in either case :p

punishment. they need to be punished, not helped... they should have to go to bad person school too, where they are rehabilitated...

It should be both, but definitely more of a rehab. You should be punished for what you did, but more importantly you need to learn not to do it again. How much help from rehab are you going to get if it's forced on you though??

What if they had an addiction they could not quit, and needed rehab? In my opinion a life sentence in prison would be far worse than a death sentence.

Is there a problem with bringing up old topics? I think many of these old topics are far more interesting than some of the new ones, and could use some more discussion.

Rehabilitation. There definitely needs to be more anger management, vocational training and education programs in prison because most of the people in prison lack these things.

A) So, if no one else posts, you are spamming?(answering to the image)
B) By that logic, your post is spam.(answering to short sentence)

It's the combination of bringing up five year old topics, answering in short sentences and doing all that with multiple times.

So, if you see a couple of old threads in which you feel you could add something, you should either not do it, or do it in an unnecessary long post?
And arti, your face is spamming.
