my new mp3 player can play videos but in mpeg4 format. I have lots of simpsons/south park/family guy/futurama in .mp4 format. Are they the same formats?

basically? the only difference is that .mpeg4 has an extra 'eg' in it? other than that its the same? so a .mp4 would work on a .mpeg4 playing mp3 player? im a computer noob so i dun know anything lol

I am pretty sure that it has to do with the encoding. Also there is such things as true MP4 files and just everyday MP4 files. The Ipod for example has to have their format and true MP4s will not work.

mp3's are audio...mp4's i think are apple's encoding for audio files.

As Hydrogen said, you should be able to play them. Apple had to be different and encode music and videos files to .mp4 when you upload them to your iPod. There is a feature on iTunes that can turn this off.

It's very very complicated.

MPEG is like a commitee, and they have various standards. The problem is, with MPEG 4 everything went to hell and all different vendors created their own variations (codecs), used different file type extensions, and different 'container formats'. Forget even trying to think of something as being 'MPEG' - it's the combination of the container format, the video codec, and the audio codec, that matter.

In this case .mp4 files seem to be predominantly an Apple convention, meaning they'll be using Apple's (latest) favoured codec. Renaming to/from .mpeg or .mpg should be ok, but it is likely also a fairly meaningless operation.

MP4 is including videos.
MP3 is audio/songs.
