Well, if the discussion leads completely off topic.. then who cares?

The creater?

Good god.

I fail to see if thats sarcasm or not.

If the thread creator doesn't care, then why does it matter if we're going off-topic? Half the time, the creators are participating in the off-topicness.

I dont think member leave because stuff doesnt work/someone has done something wrong...

The good times of codex that I could remember is when everyone was a noob tongue.gif, all the members were still yaung, members had more time in their hands... now days alot of people became private and became inactive... alot of people left for personal reasons.. people left because high school wasnt that siriusn then they went to college.. and they got only 1 chance to succeed... people dont have much time on their hands... people got their own lives now.. they became more mature... and even though some members register and some are active its just not the same... different members... we were private... we knew everyone like our 5 fingers... no one was a side person... everyone who got lucky to register on time didnt waste their opportunity on blowing it off, but actually tried to become private/higher rank... now the doors are open we have alot of outsiders... people come in and come out...

I think the neopets section fell over the years... a year ago atleast 10/30 topics a day were made due to event or something on neopets.. in the last 3 months we had gotten 5/30 made in a day... nowedays I saw 1 in 1-2 weeks... 1we8.gif

Dont think codex is the problem...
We had loyal members now everyone is an outsider.... codex was once a much closer community.. before the doors opened...

Before most of us were here for 1 thing Programs
Over that that evolved into being here out of comfort with each other and bonds formed. However from my very short discussion with sl64 about some of the things they are doing with the site I think that codex is in that transitional shift that from my past experiences takes a pretty decent amount of time to take place. Many peoples interest are shifting from the teenage years of their life to their young adult life where they are able to hang out with friends later, go to parties, get drunk, maintain a job, and go to school. This stage in my life was very time consuming and I was hardly ever on the internet. I don't have the same drive in making new programs just to cheat something like I used to but I still like the community and reading about peoples lives and random things on the internet and world that are posted here.
Codex is not dead nor is it dieing.
1. this time of year is always slow people have a lot of school work to do.
2. Holidays are coming way to fast.

Agreed, But as the teenagers shift to adults. The children shift to tanagers, Thus to never ending chain continues. Give it some time and everything will be fine.

agrees but a forum is always rooted to its original members and their attitude plays a big part in the community's attitude.

That's exactly why older members need to welcome newer members with open arms rather than accusations about him/her being a leecher.

I'd be towards an educational system which teaches the newer members who need it how the community rolls, because from what I understand, some of the older members find some of the posts here a little off-beat. I'm not saying the newer members are all complete idiots. That's quite the contrary. But something tells me direct contact with newer members could be a good way into getting them to have a good knowledge of the site. I'm sure members could chip in on communication.

I know when I first joined, all the ranking systems confused me. It took me a little while to learn, and if I hadn't already had a few friends here, I would of left. I think this would be a good idea, and I'd be happy to help with it!

man, doesn't anyone remember when codex first came around... so many people here were just here for the programs but most of us turned out ok. What I suggest is who cares who can download a program. Have the codex check thing let the programmer set a requirement for x post per day in the last 30 days. so if the person is just here to leech a program after a week of them spamming up the bored they won't know why the program doesn't work then when they investigate it they will find out that it requires them to be an active part of this community to continue to use the program.

So, like, a new team specifically for greeting newbies and helping them?

lol, i dunno about all that I just say instead of warning the newbies we inform them ie send them to an introduction page, and anyone that is flaming someone who simply ask -> so why don't the programs work in a thread -> ie by flaming -> "stupid leechers" blah blah... warn those people because generally its the same people accusing the new kid on the block that would like to know where/how to use a program of being a leecher... odds are they don't even know what a leecher is.

Just a group of volunteers willing to communicate, no new ranks. First impressions go a long away.

I'd be more than willing to help anyone who contacts me. Im on so often and all. If they dont ask the questions though I cant help them 1we8.gif

Mystical- Thats a good idea actually. Just a page right when they sign up talking about programs, names they may be called and how to react to it, and just tips at getting a good start here at Codex?

Im kidding, but typically a team is what would work best, at least you would think. They could possibly work together with the contest team and have a contest for newbies only. They can offer assistance to a newbie who needs help, and yeah.

I'd normally agree, but it's better to get to know the person in a sense, though it would be good to have a page, because we won't be able to contact every newbie on the site in the long run, though if we could even just talk with a few, that would be good.

Maybe on that page point them to a select few who are willing to help newbies?

I think a newbie team would make no sense at all.

Newbies don't need help, that's what FAQ's are for. Did you need a "team" to introduce you to this site? No. What'd you do? Read or find out from experience.

Most people come for programs or from referrals. If they can't read, what are they doing on the internet?

Well here are my thoughts.

Call it the Mentor system.

Whenever someone introduces them self a thread gets made in the Mentor Discussion forum that he/she is a new member and is in need of a mentor. A mentor replies to the thread saying something like "I'll do it". This way we don't have more than one mentor pm'ing this new member, It will keep it organized.

Hmmm maybe an auto post that posts in every new member topic that tells them the rules and what the guidelines of the forum is...probably 85% of the new members will read it.
