The Metropolitan Transit Authority reportedly said it wants President George W. Bush to get involved in labor negotiations to try to avoid another transit strike, according to an article Saturday in a local newspaper.

A labor official with the MTA told the Daily News that the president will be asked to set up a federal panel to mediate the agency's contract conflict with Metro-North Railroad workers who have threatened to strike next year. Nearly 3,500 railroad employees have been working without a contract for almost four years.

Workers are demanding to be paid as much as MTA Long Island Rail Road employees. Metro-North workers are not covered under the state's Taylor Law, so a strike would not be illegal.
