Over the last few days I've been playing a lot of media on my computer. These files require different video and audio codecs and I've generally not had a problem with the most common filetypes. However, when trying to play some of the more uncommon filetypes in Windows, I have found that they never play. Whereas in Linux, I have never had a problem. All I have to do is move the file over to my linux computer and it detects that it is a media file and will play it without a problem. Even the most obscure of files with the weirdest of extensions.

Just now I was trying to play a DVD on windows since the speakers on my laptop are better. It didn't work so I moved it to my desktop and it works beautifullly.

Hydrogen, that is just because Linux provides almost all codecs in a centralized zone (all free codecs [and non-free if you know your repositories]). But still, Linux PWNZ Microsoft.

God I envy you guys who are able to actually install linux!

I've tried for good once, have my cd and everything.. but the thing is I had to make partitions, which is a bitch because it's the first time for me, so I decided to do it the long way, but the only way I knew how, and that was by reformatting windows and choosing to make partitions in the course of installing windows. So I had my partitions, but I didn't format them so when I went to install linux it didn't really detect the partitions, or gave me something about couldn't install on it.

So I try to boot back to windows and bam, I get an error and I can't boot.. so I had to reformat again... was a long night for me.. plus it was with xp, which takes about 2 hours to install. I might try it sometime in the near future, since with vista it only takes about 40 minutes to install.

Anyways, if you have any good guides to installed Ubuntu 6.06 (which is the version I have), and when I mean good guides, I mean REALLY well explained, please feel free to link me to them.

Don't worry dude, I tried 3 or 4 different codec packs before I made that post . The last one finally worked but it was annoying to say the least .

I think you are making it too hard on yourself . http://www.ubuntu.com - download the desktop version for your computer type (most likely i386 but might be 64 bit too). Burn it onto a cd. Boot from the cd, and in the installer choose for your hard disk to be resized and select the size. Then keep clicking next until its done installing.

There is your tutorial . Pretty easy no?

Mmkay I'm going to try to install Ubuntu today/over the weekend. How much space do you think I should devote to it? My laptop only has like 20 gigs . Also, how much space does Ubuntu take up?

I'm not sure but it shouldn't be more than a gig or two . Depending on what you install afterward you might need more space. A 20gb harddrive is kind of small .

I know . I have 33 gigs total but I'm using up 13..

Is it easy to uninstall if it doesn't work out for me?

Ah I see...well then if you give about 7 to 10 gb to ubuntu that would be good . Try this actually...for a while, just boot from the CD and use the live cd. See if you like it. The good thing about this is that you can use the operating system without actually changing your computer. You can get a feel for it and if you like it, then you can install it. Of course, none of your settings or anything will stay after you reboot with the live cd since its stored in RAM and not in your hard drive. Furthermore, the live cd will be a lot slower than if you actually installed it but its a good way to get a feel of what ubuntu is like .

You just need to delete those partitions that ubuntu used to uninstall it . And then format that partition and extend the windows partition over it . Try to figure out whether you like it by using the live cd first though .

Eek, that sounds complicated. Is there a tutorial for that?

And mmhm I've used it before and I do like it.. just need to figure out how it'll run on my computer and how to uninstall it before I do anything drastic first .

Edit: Ugh, it requires having the Windows XP CD, which I don't have. >.<

I'm going to warn anyone using their laptop for Linux (any distro): It is most likely going to be a bit of a hassle getting wireless internet working. A large number of laptops tend to use wireless cards that use Broadcom chipsets, and since Broadcom is an ass, they don't supply anyone with linux drivers.
You can still use ndiswrapper, which essentially makes a windows driver work just as well.. it's just quite a bit of hassle, especially for newbies (I just finally got it set up right last night )

Download it all and save it in your jumpdrive? Read the tutorial from the doc file from your jumpdrive?
