I'm a traceur. Nice to meet you. Now, anyone else out there also practise parkour?

And, in case you're wondering, parkour is, in essence, treating your surrounding enviroment as an obstacle course. You break the self-imposed boundaries that society places on you, such as running in public areas, running over rooftops, jumping over cars, etc. If you're interested, simply wiki/google it.

Aye, I'm an amateur parkour practitioner. Hit up Alan (Bao, baounit, something like that) about it, as he is really big into it. I'm just a nubbie tongue.gif

I'm just getting into it.
There's nowhere good to practice around me, though. 1we8.gif

Sure there are. Any stairwells? Rails? Gyms? Trees?

Anywhere is good for parkour...

Heck, even a hill is good for practise..

I used to a little, now, I really kinda gave up, since I have no one to practice with. There's a million things I could practice on though.

You can always find people on Parkour.net, APK, or UFF. A new website is being developed for US traceurs and freerunners since M2 and Demon are pretty much out to get money and for competition.

Australia.

Lots of trees, lots of library stairwells... An olympic gym 30 mins from me =D

XD what's your worst stack? I tried to do a backflip, landed on the back of my neck... Luckily it was a padded fall.

You're pretty lucky! I don't have any open gyms in my city, so I go about forty minutes out of my way every other Friday to an open gym. What's a "stack?" Is it a move? I would say my kongs, I'm not as explosive with my upper body as much as I know I can be. I stick specifically to parkour, so I don't do anything associated with freerunning like flips, spins, etc.

...Like, a mistake...

E.g you jump and try to catch the wall, but you slip and graze down or something.

I've wanted to do parkour for ages but I'm not completely sure how to do it correctly and not real cool with getting myself snapped. However if I were ever to get into it I wouldn't really care about stacks and injuries and other crap tongue.gif

Oh. I was drilling these dashes for distance once so I was about five feet above the ground. As I was going for the kash, I overcalculated the rail, my hands went to far, and I pushed down; there was nothing there so I fell flat on the ground and hit my head on the rail behind me. I really haven't had a big injury, I only try something I know I can do. Big is not important!

Where in Australia are you located? With a little surfing, you can definately find people in your area.

Bao, how long have you been doing it?

And find a gym, and set up a really high loop, and figure out how to jump through it... It's fun, and it helps you familiarise with footing, and natural 'jerky' movements (I.E you miss something, and your body auto-twitches to nearest foothold)

I've been doing it on and off since '05 October, but since November last year, I found a small group of friends and we've been training, drilling, and conditioning since. During the spring, I had to stop for awhile for outdoor track and will have to stop soon for XC; so I'm trying to get as much jamming over the summer as I can.

Yeah, parkour will help you get over your mental obstacles too, not only physical...

Also conditions your mind oustide of normal thinking.

E.G try running in public. Like, fully sprinting... Society has made it the norm to walk.

Anyone from the UK here that practices Parkour? I'm trying to find a group locally that do it but its still growing over here....hasn't really gone mainstream yet. I can see this as an Olympic sport in the future.

It won't ever become mainstream (I think), but it will continue to grow, and might one day become as recognized as skateboarding say, due to the large amount of films and productions which feature the discipline and the easily-inspired kids. If it somehow becomes an Olympic sport, it just won't be parkour anymore - the roots will have been stained as parkour is NOT competitive.

These days you can see this is happening as the kids on message boards are like, "OMG MY KONG IS ON A HIGHER WALL THAT URS!".

Competetive is often used in the wrong way though. For example if Parkour became a recognised sport and somehow made it to the Olympics, people would be performing rather than competing. The word competing is only relevant because there are other people taking part....but are you really competing against them lol?

You are aiming to get the best score you can, which is an intrinsic aim....if your score is higher than everyone elses then you get a medal woot.....but isnt that just a reward for performing well rather than beating other people. So maybe its possible to make it mainstream without staining its ideals and principles.

Whats the name of the French Guy who thought it all up? I cant remember.... whistling.gif
