Evenin' folks,

As per the results of a poll, the hiearchy of purely member ranks will be undergoing some changes.

http://www.neocodex....o...=78079&st=0

For the time being, these ranks will hold no emphasis. There will not be new categories added for the programs section at this point. That is a decision for the programmers to come to. Once rank tags are created for these ranks, they will be added and people will be updated accordingly.

For those confused, two new member ranks will be added. Intermediate member at 200 posts and a to be named rank at 1000 posts. We'd like to hear your suggestions on a possible name for the 1000 post rank. If we see a trend with a few different names popping up, we'll then hold a poll and the name will be decided that way smile.gif

That's all for now everyone, have a good day/night!

I thought we were just discussing how to get rid of all the ranks we have..

The Neocodex solution: Add 2 more ranks!

If we got rid of all the ranks then they'd have to make all programs available to everyone tongue.gif

While I think we do have too many ranks, I think that there's little harm in encouraging people to climb ranks while integrating themselves into the community. Hopefully having an intermediate rank will ensure people don't see much of a need to spam to get to 500 because there's something in between to make it seem like less of an impossibility. It also recognises that the person has bothered to be active. We have a few people at around 250 posts who don't post often but post quality content every time, which I'd rather see. But because of this, they're passed off as *just* member level.
And believe me I do see this happen. Member level users are treated less kindly, trusted less, assumed to be nothing more than a hindrance until they progress, which does take time considering 500 posts should take around a month or two, if not more.

At other sites apparently hitting 1000 posts is a pretty big deal. Here it hasn't been. Many members have private by this stage, and those that don't want the rank or otherwise don't have it, should still receive something to show that their contributions and loyalty are given some appreciation, even if it's an award style rank.

As for the name... Experienced member is reasonable... although I don't think it would work in reality. I dunno... have to think more, maybe look around some other forums for ideas or inspiration tongue.gif

We disagree. More ranks isn't going to help anything at all.

I don't see the point of new ranks to be honest. The entire point of 500 = Advanced was to see who would stick around and remain loyal, was it not? And 500 posts isn't all that much anyways, I had no trouble reaching it myself. Not to mention, as already said, most people I've seen who have 1,000 posts are Private, and if they're not, then they just don't want it. blink.gif

I try not to treat people differently based on their user levels, but what would an extra rank do? Some of the older members would still consider them newish, so there would be little, if any change in that argument at all.

Who is this "we" you speak of? tongue.gif

Not that I'm disagreeing or anything. tongue.gif

--

If you look at the tread, the majority of the people who spoke up ( in favor of ) in the thread where the ones who actually use the programs we offer. Sadly they will recive nothing new and in four years we will add another rank in the middle "to show appreciation."

I'll come out and say it.

It's a dumbass idea. Not even worthy of stupid. It's a dumbass idea.

NOTHING will be achieved. I'll be honest, I'll still view them as being "n00bz", no matter the rank. I don't even care about the "private member" rank. None of it proves anything. All these ranks are is to show who spams the most, and show who won a popularity contest.

Since I'm a lazy ass, someone create a poll somewhere for the removal of all ranks except:
Admin
Mod
Member
Programmer (Includes TechTeam)
Contest Team
Ezine

Anything else can be pushed into one of those categories, or done away with all-together.

I don't understand why having too many ranks is a bad thing really. Some can be done away with yes(MP/LC solver, 100 post day), but narrowing the number of ranks down to less than 10 is quite drastic.

I really agree with almost everything Ange said.

Don't agree with Ange. People who look down on people with just member level aren't going to magically adopt this new rank and think 'Ooh they've hit 200, while normally I would still be looking down on them, this new tag means I won't! =O', it'll change nothing in that respect in my opinion.

I also think it a bit mental that we're having big discussions about having too many ranks with people yammering on about getting rid of a few, and then we add two more. Well done Codex.

I'm thinking 'Unnecessarily Ranked member' sounds good personally.

Edit: Just read Ange's second post. And hun, that's daft o-O. Contest has two tags as it is, the same colour with different text...that's still two tags =S. They're practically the same colour anyway, why bother messing? =/

In fact, why are we discussing it at all? There's like three topics in staff about this and nothing is happening anyway!

You can always add ranks to encourage people to be more active. I would be for the 1000 one, because it keeps someone motivated to post after getting to 500. However, the intermediate member rank seems pretty useful to me, because you can reach that in a week or so , get "programs" (I dunno if this is a part of the agreement) and be less active after. 1we8.gif

I'm going to create extra work for you guys and force you to keep resetting me back to Member, just so you know. I don't want to be an "Intermediate Member". In fact, I now feel less inspired to post.

I don't see the problemo. There's nothing wrong with adding a few extra ranks. It's not like if we had some forum inspector come and check us out he would be all "omg too many ranks, phail!" While I don't think people will magically gain respect for Intermediate Members, I do think that it will motivate them to post more. Other than a few people who want to cause problems and deny the rank to make some sort of statement that just makes you look more like a tard, for the most part it definitely would motivate posting I think. Even if it only makes them want to get to 200 to get some programs that are a little bit better than the basic member programs--at least they got to 200. And who the hell cares if they're only being active for the programs, that's why we all join in the first place, for the most part anyway. At least they're being active. Then they eventually get to 500 posts, and then they're eventually an active and loyal member. And whose to blame? Those damn rank tags.

...That's what private is. That's what retired is. Adding more and more ( without benefit ) is just so pointless.
