Well I really like the specs on my laptop, its got nice shit tongue.gif The only problem is that most of that potential is wasted running Vista.

I'm looking for a relatively user friendly linux distro for basic computing needs. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being Windows XP and 10 being Unix, I need a 3-5.

Halp?

Ubuntu would fall in like a 3 - 4 as far as user friendly goes. You'll have to learn some basic commands but it's pretty much just as easy as windows. Just don't expect to do alot of the main stream things as easy, like real gaming. wink.gif

There is always WINE for that. Or dual booting if it comes down to that. I don't really game a whole lot anyway.

Even with wine you won't be able to play a lot of games. You'll still get a lot of lag and graphics errors out the ass.

You'll have to duel boot if you want to do any sort of real gaming.

Can Linux update Zunes also?
And how hard is it to find printer drivers and whatnot?

Yeah they have a few options that will let you sync up to the zune. I don't know if zune market place works though, probably not.

Printing in Ubuntu has become much easier than it once was. Just connect your printer and tell the computer to detect it. Three clicks and you have set it up.

I would go with Ubuntu as well Redlion.

Ubuntu is probably the most popular and user-friendly distro now. I dual-boot it on my laptop and PS3. tongue.gif

o boot manager. Yeah GRUB comes pre installed with Ubuntu. It's pretty awesome so just stick with it. You can also modify it pretty easy to set which one boots by default and all that jazzy stuff.

Opensolaris was developed by Sun Microsystems, same people as Java, I think it's aimed more at a programmer user but I'm not too sure. Mepis is a little underrated, it uses KDE. I tried it out for a few days and I thought it was really good but I don't like using linux so I never stuck to it tongue.gif

Unless something has changed in the past week or so, this isn't true. Microsoft has been incredibly tight-lipped as far as the specifics of their device, and last I knew, the encryption on the device hasn't been broken yet to allow anything except the original Zune client on a windows machine to make transfers.

How proprietary of them. But really, did anyone expect different from Microsoft?

Also, nub question here, but do I need a DVD disk to burn .ISOs onto? Or can I burn it onto a CD?

Usually, you'll just need a CD. It depends on the size of the image. If it's 700mb or less, CD. Anything higher, use a DVD.

yup, 700mb for cd, DVD is 4.7 GB. when burning i recomend using IMGburn, it's free and easy to use.

The download I got came with a CD burning client. I think it'll work if it came with Ubuntu tongue.gif

Alright, I'm burning the disk right now. Hopefully within the next couple of hours I'll have everything set up. If not, I'll be asking a whole lot of questions about linux commands here tongue.gif

i been using fedora and not at all thrilled. im glad i could find alot of OS software for it but I just started using ubuntu and its very user friendly. if you never used a linux GUI, it wont be difficult to learn. i picked up on it rather quickly and on a scale of 1-10 id says its a 4 or 5
