Is there some key to affective selling/advertising that I'm missing?
Can somebody help me?

What kind of items are they? Some kinds sell quicker than others due to demand.

Things like clothing. But I keep ending up with pet-specific clothes; Like zafara shoes..scorchio glasses, and these items don't seem to sell too well.

Clothing is actually real ETS I heard.
I know that if your account name starts with certain letters it shows up more. But it may be that not many people have Zafaras. Or they just don't want to dress it up like that. I don't know if people invest in clothes to resell later. So if you are looking for items like that you should probably switch shop. As people only buy clothes when they want to put it on. *i think*
JCG can comment better on this. She's the clothes expert. I've PM'ed her a link to here.

lol Noit (:
Yes, me and my significant other (and a few other codex junkies) AB at clothing for our main source of income daily. Although there are some items that have a hard time selling (such as unpopular species like Moehog, Kau, etc.) as long as you update your shop prices daily and keep your prices under the wizard you are well on your way. Some unbuyables at clothing just need to be thrown into shops @ 99,999, because nobody wants them- but it's still raw profit.
What I do is underprice mallers by 1-5k on particularly HTS clothing items and wait for them to buy me out and stock up their own store. xD
Me and jcrboy do things differently in terms of selling our stuff. I like to undercut EVERYONE by a huge amount forcing them to buy me out or having to drop their own price. Jcrboy keeps his prices usually lowest on the wizard and has an equilibrium reached in his store where he just keeps adding stock and selling stock gradually, but maintains a fair amount of stock at all times. (He's jew like that)
In any case, running ABer in Unis Clothes for 3-4 hours a day can yield 20-50 items (from my personal experience) and this can gross to about 500-2mil daily profit. (And that is WITH undercutting people by 5k)

Thats a pretty complete guide.
Also I remember there is a way to appear on the shop wizard before a user has to refresh too often, but I think it was the first letter of your username, so I guess that ruins that plan. Maybe I'll look it up.

Guide to appear before everyone else on the wiz:
1. Beat everyone's price
2. If you have the SAME price, be alphabetically before them
It's not really that hard.
Yeah, I just make sure I'm lowest on the wiz. I have about 7.5 million's worth of items in my shop at the moment. Everything sells eventually.
I sell about 200k-600k worth of shit a day...
It all depends on
1. Demand.
2. Do you beat the wiz.
Even if demand is low, someone will want the item eventually. If you're always the lowest price then someone will buy your items.
JCRGirl targets the mallers. She wants someone who owns the mall to come into her shop and say "I'm clearing this shit out." and buy everything. I find my method may not provide more profit immediately but will have a higher overall profit.

I have found stock isn't moving as well as it was say two months ago and there has been deflation in prices. That's because of the number of players on the site has gone down since Christmas. However, things have picked up a little cos of school returning.
JCRGirl, can i ask you, what are you AB settings? Whenever i'm in that store I never get anything.

Yeah, post on the shop ads neoboard. I always get a boost in sales after I've done that. I just hop onto the board, and go through all the topics that have "Post your shop here" type titles. Paste my shop url in, and mention that I'm having a sale.
