Lots of fun although some days it can be challenging...not the patients per se, but the ones working with you.

oooh i wanted to go to school to become a nurse but my mom (who is a RN) talked me out of it beacuse i probably would not be able to handle the death rate (i wanted to work in the baby ward) . so i have been a carpenter for 4 years now and im still very much enjoying it.

It's quite simple. The smaller ones can carry one brick, we can tie two together for the older kids, and call out, "Sink or swim".

And then the parents laugh, I laugh, the kids get their nervous chuckle, and my boss gives me one of those "what the fuck are you doing?" looks.

The reality:

We teach lessons at a larger outdoor facility, which is broken down into the main pool (which consists of an 8-lane 50 meter pool with an attached diving well and a shallower wading area) and the 'plunge' pool (a separate body where the water slides dump you out).

Our lessons are broken down so we have the younger kids (under 4) being taught in the shallower side of the pool, the middle-aged kids (usually 4-7) are in the plunge pool, and the more developed lesson-takers (my oldest is 10) are with me in the diving well. The swim team takes over the actual lap area.

The diving well in which I teach is twelve feet deep and fifteen meters across. Basically, since I'm working with the more advanced end of the swimmers with us, I'm able to have them swim the full fifteen meters with very little difficulty. However, there are still technical difficulties that need to be worked out, which is why they're in lessons. The biggest issue that I see is on Freestyle (or front crawl, whichever you prefer ) comes with the breathing. When some swimmers take their breath, they roll their entire body over on to that side, to a point where they're crossing their arm completely underneath them and sometimes even have it pointing to their opposite side.

It's a little difficult to explain, but the end result is that they're getting an uneven pull on one side because of how their body rolls, and they swim off to one side. The idea behind the bricks and rope was to help give a point of reference for the swimmers to follow. If you look in a lap pool, you'll see a line going in a straight line down the middle of each lane. I was basically trying to emulate this.

If none of the students in my class have this problem, I'll stretch it the other way and mark a halfway point. I usually do this for the younger kids, and I'll have them do, say, halfway Butterfly and halfway freestyle. The idea here is that I'd much rather have them do a shorter distance of (a more difficult stroke) and do it right than have them do full lengths and have their technique go to shit halfway through.

OMG, you hospital assholes!! My pharmacy has to call on half the prescriptions that come from the hospital, and it takes forever to get connected with the prescribing doctor or a nurse that can help. Usually it's for the stupidest shit ever- like they forgot to put how many pills to dispense or they write it for a stength that doesn't exist. Seriously, doctor? Meanwhile, back at the pharmacy, the patient is screaming at us like it's our fault. Giving me grey hairs and shit.

Sometimes I fantasize about sending dogshit in the mail addressed to repeat offending prescribers for Christmas, but I doubt it will solve anything.

I love it when annoying customers come by, because its a serious boring work. I REALLY enjoy it when people make a fuss, we mostly put it on speakerphone (how unprofessional eh )
I'm not even allowed to hang up before the customer, so I love it when they stretch the call a bit, then I can relax for a couple of minutes.

My job involves teaching jujitsu in the kids classes at a local gym and part time work at radioshack. My only other job was as a lifeguard. There are a lot of people with interesting jobs on this thread .
