Try to find anything under Miyazaki, All his animes are good fun and have interesting story plotlines.
However I like Fooly Cooly its kind of hard to explain (which is why it's good). On the surface, it's about this kid whose mundane life is interupted by a crazy girl from outer-space named Haruko, and has to fight with her to destroy invading robots...or something. I actually understand very little of the plot, but that's why it's good (apparently the manga is much easier to understand). But it's only 6 episodes long, so it'll take you like 2 1/2-3 hours at most to watch the entire series. The whole thing seems to be a veiled metaphor (particularly the changes the main character Naota undergoes, like growing horns when he gets hit/excited, etc.) for puberty and the beginnings of sexual realization. I've watched the series like 3 times, still don't understand everything. =P
But here's the wiki for it anyway, in case you're ever interested(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fooly_Cooly). I think you can probably just watch it on veoh.com or other sites of that sort if it seems like it'll interest you. And like I mentioned before, The Pillows did the soundtrack for the series, which is pretty killer (listen to The Pillows if you ever get into J-rock, or just in general. I don't watch anime or listen to Japanese music really, but I do love The Pillows).
Good Luck In Your Search For Animes
