The topic title says the computers are already networked, so Mr. Hobo is presumably not asking how to physically connect them, but which protocol/software to use.

You could enable samba on the Ubuntu system, then you can see the Ubuntu system as a network share from the Windows system, and/or mount a directory on the Windows system from the Ubuntu system. That way you can permanently be able to throw files around seamlessly.

If it's a one-off thing and you can't be bothered with samba, FTP's fine.

If global warming happens, the UK is likely to get a lot colder. At the same latitude as the UK is Labrador in Canada, which has almost Arctic weather. The UK is warmed up by the Gulf Stream, a flow of warm water from the Atlantic. If the polar ice melts, the Gulf Stream could be diverted away or eliminated by the flow of cold water, resulting in the UK becoming massively colder.

In other words, if global warming happens, the UK will have awful weather. If it doesn't happen, the UK will have awful weather. Whatever happens, the UK will have awful weather. It's the way it's meant to be; what would we bitch about all day otherwise?
