Baby dont hurt me, dont hurt me, no more....

Just kidding. No politically charged crazy band talk from this sonic.

Anyway, my question for all of you philosophers, and thinkers, and yes even you movers and shakers (Wow, did I really just do that?) is..... What is love? I understand the scientific meaning of the word, the chemicals in the brain and what not, but how does it effect you. Do you believe there are different kinds of love?

I for one, have never really experienced love as a young one. Daddy was never there, mommy never loved me, sort of deal. Anyway.....

I have had the same girlfriend for over 2 years now, I believe if you dive back far enough into my post history you will see a topic asking about what is more important, my girlfriend or football. The topic, much like many of my old topics, turned into an angry brawl. Anyway, I have always thought I loved this girl, but I never really understood the semantics of it. That is until I was sent to kill people for my country over in Iraq. While I was there, the hardest thing for me was not being shot at, or even killing. Its was missing my girlfriend. I sat there at night when I was on patrol, trying to stay awake, and just thought about all the horrible things I had did to the one person who had always treated me with the utmost respect. When I came back, that is when I realized love. How important, and powerful it really is. Im not talking about cheesy love, I am talking about the real deal devotion type. This girl wrote me everyday, cried every night. Flew to Georgia to see me in the hospital and almost lost her job. She knew what love was, and showed it. Why did it take a severe case of separation to get me to realized loves potential?

Well thats enough mushy talk for me.....I think there were 8-9 different questions in that post, feel free to answer any number of them.

Love essentially is devotion at its purest form. It is beyond that really difficult to define and also just so much of an interpretive word. In other languages they often use more than one word for love depending on the type. For example Hebrew has three different types. One for the love that you are speaking of - the love between a husband and a wife, the love that is purely sexual, and the love that comes between friends, parents, or children. The Jewish people believed that you needed all three in order to have a good relationship that will last between husband and wife. Us on the other hand... I mean we use love for everything. I love ice cream. Do I really? Not enough. It beats me and treats me poorly on the insides sad.gif

And as far as the separation... one never really knows what one has until it is taken away. This is why it is hard for people to understand poverty or emotional trauma.

A year ago, I took a trip to Hawaii and read a bunch of Hume, Nietzsche, Kant and Hegel (also: high as hell.), meditating on thoughts like love. I don't know if I entirely agree with it now, as I went through a period of studying the Cynics, but I tried to suppose that love was "the sacrifice of natural self-interest to further the interests of another."

In saying this, I assumed that, instinctually, every living creature is inclined towards self-preservation, reproduction, and entertainment. (Can you not hear Zarathustra?) It's abstract enough to fit under most perspectives of love.

I honestly think I loved someone last year... it was all good for a few months, talking, we both knew how each other felt, and talked about it loads, but we ended up boyfriend and girlfriend, for a stint, but soon after, it didn't work out... Not like we weren't as close to boyfriend and girlfriend as you can get, without the labels, anyways... but I think I loved her. She was the reason I got up for school every day, without having to drag myself out of bed... keep in mind, I was depressed before I met her, and that went away, it was like I found new motivation, and new reason to do the things I had to do every day.

Not talking about that girl that I didn't know was pregnant or not. Bitch.

That was a stupid mistake, and I'd take it back if I had my time back... lol

I find there are many different kinds of love and to each person the term "love" is different so yes I do think there is different types of love and lust for that matter too.

As for how do love effect me? Well I have a loving boyfriend who is my partner for life the father of my child.. .this is my family so it effects me in anything and everything I do and thats all its too it!

    COS LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD!

Seriously though, love is just an emotion which is often idealized by imagery. Love to me is more of a mutual completiton of personality flaws and how well it vibes. It's like when a drummer and a bassist are locked in, right? It's that whole groove thing, not to sound like fuckin bootsy collins over here.

    THIS IS AN OPINION

Oh my, my, my. So many things to say...Philosophically, I believe love is the connection one shares with a person when they realize: "I want to spend eternity with you. I don't care if we're poor, deprived, or inexerienced. I want you. For the way you are." However, many do not realize ths, and think infatuation is love instead.

As for different kinds, I believe yes. As stated above, infatuation, lust, and love are all different. Infatuation tends to be short term love for a specific thing in someone, whereas love is a continuous branch of eternal hate and appreciation (as arguments are to love). Furthermore, lust is just liking a persons body, and this shold not even TRULY affect tyour ove towards someone.

As for food for thought, consider this: If you can have too much of a good thing, and dealing with anger builds character, what is love but an expression of one's representation towards another? THINK ABOUT IT.
