From what I saw on Rachel Maddow tonight, the US government has finally started assessing the situation separately from the Japanese government. She made it sound like we were quoting almost word for word their press releases, just dubbed into english. Apparently, you give the US bureaucracy a few days to crank the numbers, and all of a sudden we're experts on everything. If it affects enough people, some Sec is gonna fly in and 'appraise the situation' before the president lays down the law. Shit, the US government will engineer rice farming in China, cure their drought ridden crops, just so we can keep outsourcing shitty jobs to them.
Anyways, so the reactors aren't even the main problems. The main problem from what Rachel said was the 100 tons of spent fuel rods sitting in a cooling pool. An empty cooling pool. So those can melt, explode, and irradiate their surroundings, not necessarily in that order. But the possibility increases as we continue dicking around on recovery efforts.
