So with the amount of neopets avaliable and the many different skins that are avaliable on them how is it determined which ones are expensive and which are cheap?

the expensive ones how are they usually obtained? pound? labray?

just wondering how their is such a large range of prices for pets thats all

Well, the Color, the Age, the HSD and the fact of it being UC or how well it is named etc etc including species can influence the prices/value greatly. E.g blue Draik bad name, 40 hsd would be worth less than a Pirate Draik, Well named, 300 hsd... or even age can also influence value etc...

Also you may still have 20k of a species... but only lets say 400 of them may be "cheaters" and sell pets... also... there usually is a greater amount of buyers than sellers... Usually that would mean the buyers would pay quite nicely to the "few" sellers available to buy from.

Also, with many expensive pets, such as draiks and krawks the likelyhood of one being zapped is extremely low... and by low i mean no one has ever had proof that they got a draik or krawk from a labmap... most of the time they come from the eggs or mp's/trans... for draiks... i am not sure how many people actually use krawk petpets to get krawks as pets but yeh... even the clothing available to wear as a customization can help in price and value etc...

    I'd just say popularity.
most UC Faeries are easy to trade/sell while some UC Darigans/Mutants tend to be less attractive and would be harder to trade/sell

But popularity depends on everything i already stated. How often do you find a bd uc mutant or darigan? you find more faerie bd pets...

hrms just wondering then from the pound which kinda pets would you recommend adopting/ i've only just started adopting pets but didnt know which ones to go after thats all.

Adopted a few but how can you figure out which ones are actually worth adopting and which arent

and the types of pets that are only gettable by labzap, are they possible to get via the pound?

I don't think there are any lab only PETS, only lab only COLORS and I think they can be adopted (ice, sponge, fruit/veggie chias, etc). If you see expensive colored pets (faerie, darigan, pirate) those are worth adopting, but things like tyrannian and lower end colors are hard to sell. Look for pets with a high HSD, those can be sold as battle pets. Also, krawks, draiks, and hissis should be adopted since they sell nicely. Also, if you ever see a good name, adopt it.

You will get tough competition though from auto adopters, but good luck!
