Here's a short wikipedia synopsis: "
Trichotillomania, which is classified as an
impulse control disorder by DSM-IV, is the compulsive urge to pull out one's own hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment. It is often chronic and difficult to treat.
Trichotillomania may be present in infants, but the peak age of onset is 9 to 13. It may be triggered by depression or stress. Due to social implications the disorder is often unreported and it is difficult to accurately predict its
prevalence; the lifetime prevalence is estimated to be between 0.6% (overall) and may be as high as 1.5% (in males) to 3.4% (in females)."
and here's the rest of it if you're so inclined:
http://en.wikipedia....richotillomaniaSo, I pull just my eyelashes. They are all gone. I started around 11 years old and haven't stopped since. I think being stressed from school and home life started it, but I didn't have it bad at all. For me it's a nervous habit, and most of the time I don't realize I'm doing it. I'll be sitting at the computer or watching tv, and by the time I'm done picking, I didn't realize I was doing it. But when I know I'm doing it, it feels really good. It feels like steam or pressure is coming out as soon as the follicle pops out.. if that makes sense? Its a real stress reliever.. until after I realize all my lashes are gone again. Then I get really depressed.. I know it's just eyelashes, so what, right? But it feels like more.. I feel so bad and sorry for myself that I can't control such a simple action. I can't stand having eyelashes though. It feels like needles in my skin sometimes. I feel like I'm at a point where I just give in because I can't stand having them.. and when I have grown them out somewhat there are still bald spots where they will never grow back.
One day when I am financially stable I hope to attend therapy and get some treatment for this. And when I can move out, that will help too. But until then I just try to live with it.
I think I am luckier than those who have it and pull out their hair or eyebrows and such, but it doesn't make it suck any less. I put eyeliner on where most people can't tell.. but some do. It makes me really self-conscious even though I know most people can't tell. But I don't want to have to put on eyeliner every day just to go out. I don't want to look like a cancer patient with no makeup on. I want to wear mascara and actually look decent in fake eyelashes. (They don't look good without eyelashes.) I just want to be normal and not have some weird nervous habit that no one's ever heard of.
If anyone asks about them, I just tell them I don't have any, or that I burned them off or some shit. I hate lying about it, but I don't want to admit that I have this. It's embarrassing to have such a stupid nervous habit, and it feels even more stupid that I get so down about it.
My parents don't understand at all. We don't have the financial means for me to enter therapy, but I don't think they would want me to do that anyway. They don't voice their opinions very much.. but when they do it seems like they would rather me keep on having this than me go to therapy. Makes me seem "crazy" or something to other people I guess. Parents.. awesome, right?
