(In a bit of irony, I actually think I made a topic about this several years ago but don't really know if I did or not... Anyways, I'll just make this one now. :p)

So this isn't happening nearly as often as it used to... but does anyone else ever think of something and not know if they actually experienced it or if they just imagined experiencing it? I'm not sure if it's just my fucked up mind, if I have too vivid of an imagination, or I've damaged my memory during periods of my life that it's all too blurry to make distinctions.... but many times I will think upon something and recall it to my memory but it is fuzzy. I'm always so unsure if I lived it, saw it, or thought it up entirely...

Hope I don't need to explain any further (but will if necessary.)

Anyways, anyone else have trouble distinguishing reality and fantasy in their memory?

That happens when someone describes someone I did when I was like 3, and get this sort of 'I remember this!' feeling even though I didn't remember it before. Or when you look at a photo from your childhood and 'remember' but you only remember what's in the photo and nothing before or after the photo being taken. I think I know what you mean but it's hard to explain, isn't it?

I've got this one memory of seeing a seagull trying to swallow a tiny frankfurt sausage.
Everyone i've told this story to has tried to convince me that it was something i saw on video or on the net.
The thing is, I can specifically remember pointing it out to someone I just cant remember who it was or where or even when.

It started so long ago, i really dont know what to think about it anymore.

It's that feeling exactly! Like it's simply too long ago to really remember, bu you still have that essence of a memory there. What really gets me, though, is that sometimes I find out that it never did happen... or that it happened to someone else and I simply heard about it... Yet I can recall the entire scenario playing out in my mind as if I lived it... For that reason, I never really know what happened and what didn't when I get this feeling...

I would make some comment about how we are all connected and all are really one being, God, being manifested in many forms, and this is experienced sometimes by tapping into that universal conscience, but I doubt it would get very warm reception here, so I'll save it for hippy camp. :p

I'd believe that because the alternative is believing that I'm slowly going insane :) Which sums up a lot of religious people I know.

I kinda get what your saying. I experience something a lil different though, I almost SWEAR I dream about things and then it actually happens in reality! The thing is its always something that isnt that significant just small things, like woman walking down the street in the exact same outfit and she trips or something, but i feel like I've seen it before  Im just probs going mad....

Funny, I had a similar experience a few days ago.

For as long as I can remember, the earliest memory in my life that I can recall is from when I was 4. It's night time, I can't remember what house we lived in at the time but it was sometime around fall and it was a really dark and spooky night. And for some reason I'm looking for my uncle whose staying with us. I don't remember why I was looking for him either. Anyway, this part is the most vivid, I get the living room and all the sudden I feel something pricking my butt. Like a sharp pain. So I pull back my PJs and there's a splinter sticking out of my butt. I have no idea how it got there but I'm too scared of the pain to pull it out so I leave it there and the memory just ends there.

The more I think about it the more I suspect that it was just a weird dream. But i really can't decide what it was...

Ever heard that theory about how we're all reincarnations of a single entity being reborn over and over again in different time periods?

Every once in a while, ill be somewhere, doing something, and have an extremely strong sense of deja vu. It hits me so strongly, that I can almost certainly predict what is about to happen, or what someone is going to say. Such as, it happened before in a dream, THEN it actually happened. I have memories of the event im experiencing right then and there, with no reason for me to remember it. Is this what you mean, Cody?

This! I constantly feel like I have been through something before and might've dreamed it or had something very similar happen.

This happens when I'm sleeping. Someone comes to wake me up and after a while I can't remember if someone came in or if I just imagined it....Usually I go back to sleep thinking I imagined it.....hence why I needed to get an alarm clock....

    Thanks for all the responses!

No guys, I'm not really talking about deja vu... (Though I am familiar with it and this may be related in some regards...) deja vu is more the experience of living something over again. I'm talking about thinking back upon something and not knowing if you actually did live that.

As to deja vu? I used to get that ALL THE TIME. Most of the time that I experience it any more I call it deja vu to the x power... ex. Someone says something to me and z happens causing me to think about y. Then I have that experience of not only doing this before, but of saying, "Oh shit... deja vu."... but I also remember saying "Oh shit... deja vu." so I end up saying something else like wtf?!?! I've had deja vu about this before!!! etc. The most bizarre one was deja vu to the 10th power. :p

I'm tired and probably a bit insane... sorry if that didn't make sense. :p

Seriously, if you're having these kinds of issues, get hypnotized and see if it's an issue with trauma. Give the hypnotist enough direction, and he can weed out the truth. Might be a little expensive though, but if you're satisfied with the results, you can ask him to get rid of some social problems you might have as well.

I've never actually experienced deja vu....what exactly is it? o.0

This happens for SO many pictures I have. I remember the picture being taken but I don't remember anything else

meh... I think hyponotism is a load of shit. :p What makes you think any of this is trauma related?

At one point I did have issues with PTSD... namely flashbacks and anxiety from them... but I haven't had any flashbacks or other symptoms in over a year now... just wondering why you think it's trauma related... :S

deja vu (literally "already seen") is the experience of feeling sure that one has already witnessed or experienced a current situation, even though the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain and were perhaps imagined.

I think around the time that I was new to codex, you had made a topic where you had similar experiences except that you would remember nothing at all. You'd have large amounts of money in your pocket and you would have no idea where it came for. You would also be in places and be unable to recall how you go there. This was also shortly before you got your health issues. If this topic was made in private or some other area, I really do apologize, but I don't think it was.

To give at least some comfort, it's an accepted fact that normal people people only remember 5% of what they do in a day. As time goes on, we recall less and less unless our brains deem it important to remember. I know I have these issues and I know a lot of people have them as well. Of course, there are exceptions *glares at Scott* He remembers just about everything. He can read a text book and get perfect on a test a year later. It's not fair :(

Personally, I have issues recalling if I have said something 5 minutes ago or if I had just recalled saying it. Even if it may be important, I don't want to say it again if I question it as it's embarrassing.

Yeah... but this is less about me forgetting true memories and recalling things as memories when they absolutely never happened to me... :S

I'm not sure if this counts but I will act out situations in my head long before the happen (Conversations with people) and then will have to remind myself sometimes that the conversation as not yet happened, and to not treat them differently.

actually, that is exactly what counts! A bit less mysterious but that's about exactly what I'm talking about... just longer time between them happening and sometimes remembering experiences that were had by someone who isn't me at all...

Either way, I'm glad it happens to other people! :p

You've experienced it in the past, but it was stored away in your subconsciousness and therefor forgotten; when you see/feel something that can be connected with that event it will become conscious again

interesting theory... I usually can recall the whole sequence though... and a lot of times I can actually know what people are about to say/what is about to happen once I enter into that state of deja vu... Which is rather peculiar... Hmmm.....

That's just your memory filling stuff in. Stuff it got from other places. Our memory does that a lot.
