I would say when it comes to quality, graphics and over all worthness.
PS3, because you get instant blue ray dvd player, you don't have to pay for online, and the graphics are just that much better.
But if you want a huge community with a lot of people to play with, i would go with Xbox.
In my thought... they both go their ups and downs.

recently got a PS3 and we are in the process of hacking the firmware so we can save games to the hard drive and play them from there without a disk. and will play downloaded games. the most recent firmware wont work we had to take back our ps3 and get a 120 GB one for the older firmware, and now we almost have it done.
the ps3 wireless controllers suck. they can only be charged when the unit is on, or if you pay for a docking station. and if you let the controller run till it dies it is hell to reset if it resets at all.
sony is a greedy company.

I prefer the PS3. I don't really think developers can figure out how to maximize the graphics potential, but those that try a bit harder make their games look quite a bit superior on the PS3 (Uncharted games, for example). I also prefer RPG's that Japan typically produces, so there's that, too. And online - I'd much rather things be free.
I've tried to get into PC gaming, but I hate keyboard/mouse controls, and the screen is so small it's hard to really immerse yourself into whatever you're doing.

PS3 -- too expensive, free live services.
XBOX 360 -- breaks all the time, shitty customer support, wider range of games, expensive live services.
They both suck for different reasons, I couldn't name one better over the other.

that and the controller is less bulky than the xbox controller. the xbox controller just doesn't fit in the hands comfortably for some reason imo.

PS3: Blu Ray FTW. That's the only reason we bought ours. Now we use it all the time, but rarely for gaming

yea another good point the xbox controllers are so huge its pretty hard to get used to
