Would they have any justification in doing so? My gut reaction is no, but the clauses are so vaguely written that I'd think the attorney general could shutdown anything

    Seeing as they are owned by Viacom.. no. I heard Viacom is a huge supporter of SOPA anyways.

    I wouldn't worry about SOPA shutting Neopets down. SOPA could single-handedly kill Neocodex though. :/ Though if that were to happen, we would move the site to some other country, and try and sustain on traffic from Canada/UK/Australia/others. :p

    Neopets has lots of outside advertisment, any of those advertisers link to copywrited material then neopets could be taken down according to the vague clauses in SOPA.

    It's pretty unlikely, Neopets is basically a test model for SOPA. It's the most censored and controlling website I've ever used. :/

    In the wise words of Maddox:

    "The problem isn't this shitty bill, it's the people who sponsored it. So we protest this bill today, bang enough pots and pans to shame a few backers into not letting this bill pass, then what? Those same dipshits who wrote this legislation still have jobs. They're going to try again, and again, and again until some mutation of this legislation passes. They'll sneak it into an appropriation bill while nobody's looking during recess, because there's too much lobbyist money at stake for them not to. We defeat SOPA today, only to face it again tomorrow. It's like trying to stop a cold by blowing your nose. It's time we go after the virus.

    There have been many bills attempted (and some passed) like SOPA before it. There's the DMCA act of 1998, PRO-IP Act of 2008, the 2011 Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, and now the PROTECT IP Act of 2012. Think this victory means anything? A new bill gets introduced every year or two like clockwork. Check back in a few years, and there'll be another SOPA or Protect IP Act being squeezed down the lower intestinal tracts of congress. And then what? We black out our websites again like a merry band of idiots?"

    Can SOPA shutdown neopets main site?

    I think you've misunderstood what SOPA and PIPA are designed to do. They protect the interests of media mega giants.

    Neopets -> Nickelodeon -> Viacom.

    Viacom is one of those media giants whose lobbyists are pouring millions into getting legislation like SOPA and PIPA passed. Everything on Neopets is owned by Viacom, so they would not be at risk of copyright infringement (it could get a bit muddy with advertising however). Any site using something from Neopets without permission however (like Codex) would be shut down pretty much instantly, and its owners could face criminal charges. That's why sites like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube etc are at a huge risk here, because millions of users are posting things that don't belong to them constantly, and SOPA/PIPA would put the responsibility of policing content on to the staff.

    Fuck, we don't even need SOPA/PIPA to pass, their effects are already happening - Megaupload just got shut down by the Feds and its executives are being charged, because other people (may have) used their site to share copyrighted material. It's not even clear if Megaupload themselves have actually violated any laws. The Feds were able to take down a high profile website and detain its executives - who most, if not all, don't even live in the US - without either of these bills passing, and without being able to say without a doubt that they're actually guilty of anything. Now imagine what will happen if SOPA/PIPA or future similar legislation passes.

    If you're not frightened yet, you must be living under a rock.

    This just made me super fucking sad. I had a lot of data (some legit, some illegit, but not being distributed either way) stored on those servers...
