so i've heard a lot of people ranting and raving about this "new" product (actually been around since the '50s), and i'll be honest that i've been having issues with getting the last few (read as ten) pounds off... i eat well (other than drinking), and exercise almost daily.

normally i wouldn't give a second thought to this, but a former co-worker of mine used it and lost about 20-25lbs (and no, she wasn't fat, and had a nice body the last time i saw her), and then my gf's sister started using it, and lost around 8 or 9 lbs in a week.

so i was frustrated and decided to give it a shot. today is Day 1

anyway, what thoughts do any of you have on this?

(also, i will be blogging about my 30-day journey as much as i can here)

I've read about it a lot and know a couple people who have done it. It seems dangerous to me. When my boss did it, she wasn't allowed to exercise anymore because you have to eat so little. It made her bitchier than anything. I think it probably works better for larger people (she was a healthy weight to begin with), but part of losing weight is maintenance and that seems to be where people fail with this diet just as they do with any other diet.

We conclude that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss of fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being.

Probably not the most effective diet then (although you've got another link in there so yay :p).

yeah, judging from the diet that's supposed to go along with it, i think a majority of people lose weigh based on the fact it's supposed to be an extremely low calorie diet, and that the hormone is supposed to also act as a appetite suppressant. unfortunately, for my needs and what i do, i cannot do an extreme low cal diet. i'm just going to watch what i eat more, and see how the drops work.

i've seen articles both for and against it, but i figured the best way to find out would be to do it myself.

The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission said over-the-counter weight-loss products containing human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) are fraudulent and illegal, and the agencies have told seven manufacturers to stop selling them.

    http://www.medpageto...pfc=101&spc=230

I don't know much about it, but I find illegal diets a bad idea. And dropping 8-9lbs a week isn't really healthy (depends how much you weigh I guess) and seems like something that's a quick fix will just cause you to put those pounds on again when you're done. Especially if you're having a hard time dropping that last 10 lbs through healthy eating and exercise, your body is probably just trying to stay at its healthy weight and will also want to revert back to that after you stop taking the hormones.

Also, hormones like HCG and HGH used for weight loss are generally fraudulent because they get sold in some kind of edible form, and they will just denature and break down in your stomach acid. The only way those could be effective is if you were injecting them. So if you're ingesting them, I'd say they're not really dangerous since they will just be digested and won't actually have hormonal effects :). If you're losing weight from it, it's probably from the part of the diet that requires you to starve yourself.

    -----

On another note, I'm amused by all the horrible diet options I see people use when I go visit China xD. My cousin took some sort of pills, but then found that he didn't eat at all for a few days, got freaked out, and stopped.

Although the popular one seems to be tea that makes you have diarrhea. You drink it when you eat and shit everything out without digesting it. Heard it's super effective, although I doubt having chronic diarrhea is very healthy or pleasant, and doesn't sound worth it.

    >x diet Latest Trend ~*~*~ Lose Weight Now !!

    :( !!!
But aren't those kind of diets really unhealthy and bad for you if you're at a normal weight? Maybe people aren't doing it right, but small-proportioned meals, snacking on things like fruits/veg/nuts, exercising daily and drinking lots of water was way more than enough for me back a few years ago.

Unless losing weight gets harder when you get older or something....? O_o

But people who need to lose weight generally 1. like to eat and 2. are too lazy to work out.
Alas. I have gotten a soft belly lately, and I know it's because of all the pizza I've been eating but it is SO FUCKING DELICIOUS. I haven't felt like doing sit-ups either, because I'm so stuffed with pizza I can't bare to work out. Life is so hard. /coolstorybro

i do those things, genius. i just don't have the time to work out 3 times a day, 6 days a week like i did when i was deployed. i've gained about 25lbs since i was deployed, the only real difference is i'm probably eating less now than i did then... i've just sort of hit a plateau.

it's not so much ingesting or injectin, as the instructions say to apply drops under the tongue to allow absorption. (it is pretty weird though, because it tingles and has a strange taste)

and yeah, i figured it might be from the diet that everyone else is losing weight. i can't decrease my calories too much, lest i pass out from what i do throughout the day

Eating less isn't always a problem with people who are overweight.

And if you were a healthy weight, and lost 25lbs, wouldn't that make you dangerously underweight? Seems a bit odd.

I have a problem with not eating enough to sustain my body, but I'm not losing weight and I'm probably not gaining muscle either.
If I wanted to lose weight and excersise, I have to start eating better so I have the energy to excerise and sustain myself.

Fat people and people who over eat and gain weight obviously need to stop over-eating. :p

But you gotta be trolling, who the hell still thinks pills actually work? (Or whatever you're taking.)

i'm not precisely at a "healthy" weight i suppose. i mean, by Army Standards, i'm technically overweight by about 10lbs, but i know part of that is about genetics (i'm slightly below average height, and i have a stocky build). i am muscular, but the stomach area is really where the rest of my fat is. even when i was 25lbs lighter, i still had a little bit of a gut, and that's why i'm taking this stuff. it's "supposed' to target the areas of abnormal fat

There's no 'targeting' system when it comes to losing fat. Just do general cardio and hope for the best.

Ditto. I loooove before and after pics.

The thing is, pills usually work for their INTENDED purpose. I have had great success with pills that work as appetite suppressants when used in the first several weeks of the journey to lose weight. When you have a tendency to overeat, it is sometimes hard to eat less because you "feel hungry." Once you have trained your body to be satisfied with less, you can come off the pills and continue the journey without them. It's people who rely on pills to do "all the work" that either A) fail miserably and stay fat; or B) lose a drastic amount of weight (due to never coming off the pills during their weight loss period) and then gain it all back because they learned nothing about changing their actual lifestyle to be more healthy.

I have a problem with the whole "diet" thought process because it leads one to believe that healthy eating and good habits are things that can be adopted temporarily to achieve an intended result and then abandoned once you are "skinny enough."

Low carb is the way to go. Carbohydrates are incredibly bad for you. Bread, nuts, pastas (of any sort), rice, fruits and certain vegetables are high in carbs. Did you know the average apple contains close to 22g of carbs? That's awful. Eating animal fat and protein while minimizing the carbs you take in, or eating more fiber carbs instead is really good. Our bodies aren't meant to process carbs unless using it as an instant energy source in the case of say...an Olympic swimmer, or a body builder. Overeating carbs causes an overreaction with insulin, so the insulin will attack the sugars. So on most occasions, you still feel hungry 20-30mins after eating a high carb meal. Like cereal. That shit never fills me up. So I don't eat it. (Cereal is one of the worst for carbs. Even that diet bran shit is really bad for you.)

A really interesting self-done documentary to watch is called Fat Head. I really enjoyed it, and the guy ate fast food (limiting his carbs, so no fries, soda, etc with a daily walk) for 30 days and lost 12lbs to prove his point. It almost motivated my dad after I showed it to him. He went low-carb and lost 30lbs in a couple months without exercising. He managed to regulate his carb intake, felt fuller and happier. He also was more active in general. He had more energy.

But the truth is, you need to find something that satisfies you for losing weight. The problem with diets is...they are just that...diets. You need a 'lifestyle'. Something you can eat for the rest of your life and be happy. Because you always come off a diet.

This is hyper-generalized and not true. Carbohydrates are not bad for you. Your body and brain REQUIRE carbohydrates to function.

Massive intake of refined and processed sugars (such as are found in candy, non-diet sodas, syrups and good ol' table sugar) is bad for you.
Eating legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables (sources of complex carbohydrates) is not bad for you, regardless of how many people jump on the "low carb" bandwagon.

I didn't say eliminate carbs completely. If you're going to eat bread, eat whole grain. That's good for you. I also mentioned eating fiber. Which is found in vegetables such as green beans, broccoli, etc. Fiber is a form of carbs. I said limit yourself. People don't limit themselves. And that's issue. Unfortunately, it's also the case that processed, simple sugar filled products such as pasta, white bread, etc are cheaper then the healthy products such as whole grains, vegetables, and meat. I could go to the store, buy a bag of pasta for about a buck, a can of tomato sauce for like 70 cents, and feed en entire family of four with that. :/
