So I decided to take on the task of creating an Altador Plot autocompleter.

So, I've always had the mindset of a programmer, I think, and I had dabbled a bit prior to initially joining Neopets roughly a decade ago. I remember being awestruck at the things people were able to create. When I first completed the Altador Plot, I distinctly remember thinking, "Damn, I wish I knew more about programming, it'd be so awesome if this could be automated." Alas, at that time, I was but a lowly PHP programmer and had next to no idea how to go about completing some of the trickier parts of the plot.

That has changed. ^_^

I am very nearly finished. It's a simple command-line script, but you don't need frills for something like this. You press go, and then a couple minutes later you're done with the plot. I think that's nice. : ) Unfortunately, I find myself in a tricky position. Kway says that he has created one, but decided not to release it so as to not take away from those who complete the plot for monetary gain. I have always been a proponent of free, open-source software, so that doesn't sit too well with me, but I can at least understand the reasoning.

So, I'd like to put it to the community: would freely releasing an Altador Plot autocompleter do more harm than good?

Based on the suggestions in the previous board I would say that releasing it is good but releasing it for free is bad.

Why would it be bad to release it for free? You don't really win much from the altador plot anyway.

I haven't seen anyone actively selling Altador Plot Completion services in months now. I think the only negative effect of such a program would be the fact that shells/accounts that have completed the plot would go down in value, but that isn't really a big deal. I'd personally say go ahead and release it, the benefits are much greater than the detriment.

Pretty much this! I'm sure people wouldn't mind paying a little bit for an autocompleter that completes that tedious little plot :o

Also hmm.. So it starts from the beginning then 100%'s it in just a few minutes? It normally takes like 2+ hours legitimately.. Wouldn't TNT get a little bit suspicious? /just wondering!

I doubt they monitor that. Unless the completer refreshes insanely fast it should be totally fine.

I was thinking the same, completing it within a few minutes may result in getting frozen..

    Based on empirical evidence?

I have no intention of requiring payment for it. It's just not how I feel software should work.

As mentioned, it would take something from others, however minute. Apparently completion is a very rare service these days, though?

Well, it picks up from wherever you left off. But yeah, beginning to end shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, the vast majority of which are spent on the Vaeolus (forced ten-minute wait) and Water Plant, where the correct combination is different for everybody so that random clicking (1/256 chance) is apparently the best strategy. It does go fast (1-second sleep between requests), but I have plenty of reason to think that TNT don't check their logs, so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

    It wouldn't do any harm.

There was a free public one made on another site, and it was working for years.

In fact, if you paid someone for the service, they most likely used that program to do it. The only reason it doesn't exist anymore is because the author was too lazy to update the code.

Something like this shouldn't be charged, and honestly, nobody does the plot for monetary gain anymore. Coincidentally, the service died down early exactly at the same time when the old program broke.

Tl;dr: Release it, there's no harm.

Ah, I seee~ Yeah, I doubt TNT even goes near there, but it just got me thinking if suddenly lots of people were completing the plot super quickly TNT might get a bit shocked by it and look into things!

    .... But dang, 15 minutes?! That's so fast aaaahhh!! M-maybe us normal people are just super mega slow or something ;w;

With the amount of time that's passed since the plot has been out the vast majority of people who want to complete it have already done so by now.

Well yeah, generally people are very very very slow compared to a program :p

I don't see how it would harm anything, everyone claims the trophy has no value as the plot is always open and all the prizes are 1-3 np besides 5k for completing and random chance of claiming a ~500 np.

I distinctly remember a board on neo programs having similar programs for completing plots for you, this one was included, I personally completed altador in 30 minutes so any program that can polish it off in 15 or less would be a godsend.

You could always use it to make your shells look more legit... I mean how many people would bother solving that atrocious water pipe thing on a shell....
Like NQ said, the cheaper legit looking shells are, the better.

Funny, the water pipe thing is never as much of a time waster as the punch club is for me

I know there are a few altador plot completers off-site and some of their times are RIDICULOUS (e.g. completing the entire plot in 4 minutes) and I believe there are no freezes as of yet. I highly doubt TNT cares about the 3000NP you get from it, otherwise avatar grabbers that get 100 avies in 10 seconds would be dangerous.

We have plenty of programs that could potentially take away from someone's ability to charge for that service and I've never heard anyone see that as a problem before. People still charge for game services that could be easily done with the AoB codes on the forum. Personally, I wouldn't be willing to pay for someone to do the plot for me anyway.

As for the time thing, it took me like 2 hours. I can't imagine being able to do it in 15, but it doesn't seem like the type of thing TNT would monitor because it would be too tedious.

Yeah just clicking all the links even with quicklinks for every step would take quite a while. Assuming you got fruit punch and water plant right away too. But i'm pretty sure TNT has better stuff to worry than you opening a bunch of links and clicking knobs and levers.
