It all depends on what you're watching~ Of course you're gonna learn something new if you watch a nature documentary! Not so much if you're watching MTV or a soap or whatever :p

I hate that anything computer related they associate with Alienware because they see them as "HARDCORE GAMING COMPUTERS", except they're gaming on laptops which is just hilarious.

Or this.

I think I remember reading that the people on Big Bang tend to use laptops for their EXTREME GAYMIN RIG YEAH XDD because it's a lot easier to move them around the set, where you can't really do anything with desktops >w> But yes it's pretty dumb!

The IT Crowd is pretty alright though!!

I think so, why not right? I've probably learnt more from my television than at school that I can actually use.

I learned that dolphins have a prehensile penis (the male ones anyway).

I dread to think of the uses you find for that knowledge...

You'd be surprised how often it comes up in conversation (the topic I mean).

I feel like even with these apparently educational tv shows and all, it's still not very educational because with tv, you focus more on the entertainment value than the facts. You see the pretty pictures and listen to the funny dialogue without really absorbing the content of the show.

I remember there was a study i read about, which stated that very young children/toddlers who watched shows like dora the explorer or other apparently educational tv shows turn out dumber than the norm.

Right now is the first time in about five years that I've had ready access to TV. I almost never turn it on unless there's something I absolutely have to do and my daughter won't leave me alone. This is pretty rare though. I think that whatever educational qualities TV could have for me are ruined by commercials. If it would just go and go, I probably would be able to get something out of it, but the commercials distract from the information and make it hard for me to retain anything. They interrupt the way I think. I'd rather read about something than watch it, or watch a movie about something instead of a program about it.

People always say the Big Bang Theory is hilarious, but those nerds make me too uncomfortable to watch an entire episode. I know, you're wondering why I'm here. Well, it's one thing to communicate with you nerds on a forum, and quite another thing to see you in action.

I saw a show on Animal Planet called, "My Cat from Hell". For 7 years, I have been coping with the fact that my boyfriend's cats just hate me, but after watching that show, I've learned how to better understand and deal with his cats. I even crocheted them some little sleeping rugs. Aww.

So I'll say, yes. Tv can be educational. Even if you watch something stupid like Jersey Shore. You can learn how to be an obscene brown midget from that show.

Well, duh. They are intentionally misleading the public. To be misinformed is to be dumb. Everyone who believes anything on Fox News is a moron. Everyone.

Did you know that LeVar Burton has been working on relaunching Reading Rainbow? It's supposed to debut as a digital app. They're also looking into releasing some DVD's and video streaming.

I learn a lot from Big Bang Theory

    Nat

I hate the Big Bang Theory. People keep telling me that I would love that show because I am a physics major but for the life of me I can't get through an episode. It's just so slapstick and everyone is always yelling. It's like Two and a Half Men. I can't help but anticipate a drum set delivering "ba-dum-bum tisss" after every third line.

Edit: Ok it's not slapstick, it's just ... hmm, how to describe it. It seems overly rehearsed. It's not funny.

My physicist mother was initially amused, but can't stand the sight of it anymore. It almost feels like it's a soap opera now. I love the way all my friends who haven't even gone to univ say how much they love TBBT, and then imitate quirks, as if the quirkiness will make them Sheldon-equivalents.

I don't think tv is very educational at all. You can gain knowledge from tv, but never wisdom.
