The amount she's getting would have taken her years and years to earn. I hope she can retire on this, that would be awesome.. Even though she's going back to that thankless job in September, at least she now she has the choice to quit and not worry about whether she'll be able to afford to feed herself in a couple of years.
Or she will blow it all :|

The lucrative part is in making a sensational video and appealing to the sympathetic masses. I haven't been able to watch the video yet because every time I try it won't load. Maybe I will feel less cynical after I watch it but at this point I am wondering what makes this poor woman more deserving of handouts than the other countless individuals in thankless, dead-end jobs.
I thought the same thing even after watching the video. Sure, those kids are fucking brats and nobody deserves to be treated with such disrespect, but lots of people have to deal with assholes on a regular basis.

They should invest that money in setting up compulsory national service for all teenagers.
Or a zero child policy.

What is a bus monitor supposed to do anyway? Because if she's supposed to keep the kids in control, Karen sure sucks at her job. Or is it okay for people to lack quality in their work if they're old?
You'd think one child on that bus would hold some affection for granny and step in. But no one did. This makes me suspicious of Karen. All we see in the video is that she is an old lady and kids are cussing at her. We don't know how she treated THEM all year. I know when I was in school, I had teachers who treated me like garbage, and I live in the fuckin' suburbs. I imagine kids in rougher neighborhoods have even less sympathetic adults in charge of them
I don't think those kids should go unpunished, but I also don't think 13 year olds should be harassed by leagues of anonymous people on the internet for talking shit, and I sure as hell don't think Karen deserves $650,000 just because some little boys called her fat. Holy fuck, what overreaction. Anyway, she IS fat. And if it weren't her sitting there, it would have been some fat nerd getting bullied for being a sweaty pig. Are we sending money out to all the fat nerds who sweat like pigs, now?

I hope she ends up donating a chunk of the money to a worthy (perhaps anti-bullying?) cause, but something's telling me that won't happen...

This makes me fucking livid.
I'm very close to my grandmother and I would fucking kill any little prick who talked to her that way. Although she would probably beat their ass first..
Still. This made me cry. How can I possibly have hope for the next generation? They have no respect for anyone.
edit;
Here's a website someone set up to donate to her
They've already passed their $5,000 goal and are close to $300,000 as I'm typing this! Amazing.
This is amazing! She has gotten over $666k now. Did anyone else notice her income before? $15,506...that is far way too less.

I agree with most of what you said, but this part makes me wonder how you could forget the hierarchical madness that was childhood. I recall that when I was a child, if I saw an adult authority figure being bullied by some kids, I would know -- know, beyond a shadow of a doubt -- that he or she could handle it/brush it off... because we are, after all, just kids: nothing we say could possibly hurt a grown-up's feelings. If I dared to stand up for an authority figure in the face of other children mocking him/her, I'd risk intense ridicule myself, and I'd also immediately feel like an impotent fool for daring to think that the adult could possibly be in harm's way in the first place.
And any adult crying -- any shattering of the illusion of the invulnerability of adulthood -- would have frozen me in a state of shock, disbelief, and desperate helplessness. There's no way I would have approached a crying authority figure, not when my contemporaries were the cause of her distress.
In any case, it'd be nice to see Karen put some of that money toward something bigger than herself. Maybe to fund some local parenting courses.

So the boys are suspended for a year, not allowed to ride the bus, and must complete 50 hours of community service with old people. What if their family doesn't have a car? I suppose they'll walk to the Reengagement Center. What kind of education do you think these little ignorant thugs will receive in this alternative school for an entire year? It's punishing stupidity with stupidity. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Not stepping in to help for fear of ridicule and being shocked into helplessness at the sight of an adult in crisis just shows that you were young and as ignorant as the boys at the heart of this issue. Maybe you weren't a bully, but inaction is just as shameful as the bullying, in my opinion. But I'm not trying to say you're a bad person. I certainly have done things I'm not proud of. What I'm saying is people are stupid and make mistakes, and these 13 year old boys were stupid. The difference is you don't have the wrath of a mob screaming out for you to be punished for your ineptitude.

I think you misunderstood a good portion of my explanation.
Ignorant, of course; shameful, no. I wouldn't have refused to act in situations like this because I was afraid of being taunted (though I'm sure for some, that's enough to keep them quiet). I wouldn't have even thought to take action purely because it was inconceivable that a child's taunting could possibly bother the adult at all.
One can't be blamed for inaction due to lack of comprehension when the knowledge needed for understanding isn't readily available.

Agreed. They shouldn't be kept out of school they should be kept in school longer, plus summer school. I think the school is just trying to send them away so they don't get bad press.

I agree as well. A suspension for kids is: HORRAY MORE SUMMER!! I DON'T GOTTA GO TO SCHOOL ANYMORE!! They're just trying to make it seem like they're actually doing something, when they're not. Just the "Don't do it again" in a different way.
As for the "what if they don't have a car". Even most of the poor people have cars in America.

They really don't. They have to ride the bus.
