    No.

As long as the individual is the center and focus of society (as it is in any modern state) then utilitarianism should be the normative ethical approach. Simply put, we're a collectivity of individuals trying to maximize our pleasure. There are no gods or Pharaohs to please. Only utilitarianism offers the normative ground for that. What else do you suggest, fools?

So you're totally okay with torturing an innocent person to make a guilty person confess? Say, the wife of an alleged murderer?

    That's just wrong.

And before you argue that utilitarianism doesn't support it, yes, it does. It doesn't care about innocence. It doesn't care about torture. It cares about results.

More specifically the term coined, "the greater good."

Definitely. If a murderer is on the loose and he's likely to kill 30 more people and his wife is the only person that can incriminate him, then her wife should be tortured. Is her wife not being tortured worth the life of 30 innocent people?

Also, utilitarianism does care about torture. Torture implies a lowering in overall happiness so torture is hard to justify within an utilitarian table.

No, the wife doesn't know anything. Thus the term "innocent". The idea is to torture her in the hopes that her husband MIGHT feel some remorse and admit to the crimes.

And honestly, how many people torture people for the sake of torturing them? It's all about information "for the greater good" or to get people to behave a certain way. Utilitarianism is all for torture, whether of the innocent or of the guilty.

Oh. Torture her so that her husband feels remorse and admits it? Yup. Justified too. Albeit it depends on the likeliness of her implication and the likeliness of him committing more crimes, along with the displeasure associated with him committing those crimes and the displeasure associated with her torture.

Hitler's mother was an innocent woman. You get a chance to prevent the holocaust only by killing her while she's pregnant. Suppose you just know that. Would you allow her to live on and give birth because she's innocent when her death would prevent the slaughter of a million jews, or would you kill her and save the world? I'd kill her.

    Nah, bro. You're skinny fat.

I'll give you that you have half black genetics or something like that and high bicep insertion points, but your body is pretty much average. I realize that your narcissism prevents you from accepting this, but I figured I would try to aware you.

I'd ask you which part of me you're most envious of but this conversation is homoerotic enough by having a random guy lurk my pictures and post them all over the forum. :lol2: awk.

That's cool, bro... but, you know, being a heterosexual and all I tend to limit my interest to the bodies of females.

Irrelevant to the original conversation; however, it seems that you need to reinforce your heterosexuality very often. Interesting.

That you feel uncomfortable being judged by another heterosexual male? I get it, man. You're still confused about your sexuality and it's uncomfortable. Not a big deal!

I do feel uncomfortable when other men insist on lurking my pictures, posting them everywhere, and then trying fervently to establish conversations with me about how much they like my body. If this is common in your bro circles, I understand. I don't judge you for your choices and preferences. I just don't roll that way and hope you can respect my space.

I have nothing against the gay community by the way and you're welcome to discuss my body with the rest of my fans.

Actually, the conversations where about how I think you're elevated sense of self worth because of your body is ridiculous because it's very much average.

I will not respect your space, sorry. If you don't want people posting images that are available publicly, maybe you shouldn't make them available.
