I live in Bum-fuck Tennessee, I walked right in and out of the tiny little wooden church outbuilding where my district voting took place. It took longer for the sweet old lady that used to drive the school bus I rode in high school to find some toys for my three-year-old to play with than it did for me to sign in and vote.

Sorry for those who had to wait hours in line. It shouldn't be that way. I wish we could vote online.

I can literally throw a stone and hit my local polling station. It generally takes me 2-3 minutes to vote there and back.

To be fair, America is a mite bigger than the UK.

All the more reason why they should make better use of postal voting.

They should really change that. Over here you can just use postal voting as an alternative to manual voting without having to be out of state or anything like that and it seems to work fairly well.

In some states/counties it runs absolutely perfectly. We had a new election commissioner here, and things were completely retarded. Every single polling station has a single machine for counting votes. and early voting hours are far too restrictive to allow people to vote if they have work. Needless to say, I'm going to make sure this person doesn't get elected again >.>

How are you going to do that? :p (I'm guessing they're already not going to get re-elected given the whole debacle)

    By not voting.

It really sucks for the Eskimos. I went to bed knowing Obama won before Alaska's polls even closed.

Anyway, even if you extend early voting, or allowed more mail-in ballots, a shit-ton of moronic Americans will still wait until the last minute to vote and then cry about the long lines. People who wait until Election Day to vote and moan about the lines are like people who shop on Christmas Eve night and complain about how all the good items are gone and how fucking busy it is. Uh... DUH.

In all seriousness, in my state there isn't early voting and it isn't lawful to cast an absentee ballot unless you're actually going to be gone. I agree that people will still fuck themselves over by waiting too long, but we have an extremely narrow window for voting.

I had no idea. I couldn't imagine life without early voting.

Am I right in thinking that Americans do have the option of postal voting rather than waiting in line for hours to vote at a polling station?

Yeah, but I think it varies by state.
A couple years ago for local elections, I was out of state for getting my wisdom teeth removed and just had to fill out my ballot and get it notarized/turned in before I left.
This year, I technically could have turned in an early ballot just in case I went into labor.

The thing about it is, if you end up not needing an early ballot or to mail in your vote, you'll have to do it that way anyway. They won't let you vote at the physical polling place if you told them you were doing it differently.

Gary Johnson got 1% of the vote. Shame because if he got 5% of the vote the libertarian party would have gotten public funding for next election. Vid on it:
