After a period of despair at the declining quality, I discovered that there's still a lot of great content. The key is to unsubscribe to as many default subreddits as possible, while finding subreddits for your interests. Sounds obvious, but it never crossed my mind that there would be a subreddit for hockey or Downton Abbey or maps.

A few of my favorites, in no particular order:

/r/books - I like books
/r/cats - replaced /r/aww with this and was pleased with the results. And they like my cats.
/r/washingtondc - local subreddits are sometimes surprisingly cool! I live in Washington now, and I've picked up some helpful tips from the people here.
/r/hockey - living in Washington, I no longer have anyone to complain about the lockout to. This is my substitute.

What subreddits do you frequent/how do filter out the shit?

You should download the Reddit Enchancement Suite. It's an addon for your browser, makes browsing and organizing reddit a lot more fun. I visit mostly the default places, WTF, PICS, Funny, Frontpage, etc. There would be periods of reddit where the site becomes a bit dead, but it always bounces back. People need to live their lives to have funny stories to tell later after all ;)

I don't really care for the "stories" everyone has to tell, I tend to visit reddit when I want to satiate my interests. I don't care about a random redditor's Christmas in 1985, etc etc. Also, a sizable portion of these stories are complete bullshit anyways.

And who doesn't have RES? :p

Yeah, I tend to stay away from all the default subreddits. Not a big fan of the imgur stuff.

I really like r/soccer, I can get dedicated goal recaps, etc. quickly and concisely, and the people there are pretty cool. Bit male-dominated, but that's pretty standard across the net. r/classicalguitar is a pretty great little sub as well; it's small enough that the members aren't yet too jaded. Very, very different from r/guitar. People are pretty open-minded, friendly, and focused...it's a nice place with good resources and advice on the subject.

The key to having a pleasurable experience is to get rid of every subreddit over 1,000,000 users.

These days I frequent /r/Diablo, /r/Emmawatson and tv shows I watch.

While I'm here, these are subreddits that will instantly improve your life.

I'm subscribed to most of the defaults because they have the most users, which means more people provide content. Although I really enjoy r/neopets and r/jokes :)

Having a basic layout with no bells and whistles makes it load faster since there's usually a hell of a lot of site traffic.

``Basic"? It's badly designed though :V From looking at it from a person who never goes there's point of view, it looks messy as hell and trying to post for the first time is confusing heheh

Also I'd go there but... it isn't really good for weeaboo things >w< The Touhou subreddit is slow and dead and filled with secondaries, the doujin music one... gross and not up to date at all... I doubt the doujinshi/doujingame ones are decent lmao

I guess it is pretty confusing at first but after a while it just looks completely normal ^_^ I actually really like the layout.

Reddit Enhancement Suite changes everything! It's so awesome :3

I like to browse the front page, and frequent r/techsupportcore, r/nosleep, and r/justiceporn.
