A side is legit and an extension of your main. No NP making or fishy stuff.

A shell has no relation to your main and is used to make NP. So AB'ing, AAA'ing and all the rest.

A shell account is a empty disposable account that you use for stuff that are too risky to be done on a main account, i think

Use a proxy. There are several guides here on how to do it, use the search function.

Going on a different computer doesn't mean you'll have a different IP address.  Like Neoquest said, you can use proxies or VPN.  If you have access to computers outside of your home (library or school), they'll have different IP addresses.  You can check your IP address at whatismyip.com to make sure you don't use the same IP for your main and shell

Aren't some shells just really old inactive cracked accounts?

People tend to suspect old accounts much less than new ones.

They can be, yes. But the definition of a 'shell' account is purely that. It's an empty shell. Nothing of value on it, usually 1-4 bn'ed pets and possibly no shop/gallery and a very low avatar/trophy/games played count.
