I know we used to have some really talented musicians posting here (Ali in particular comes to mind, beautiful at her craft), is there anyone here that plays any instruments? If so, what are you playing, what kind of music do you like to play, what was your inspiriation to pick up an instrument?

I personally started out with guitar years ago. Metallica's earlier thrash material was what got me into it. I've since moved onto a couple of different instruments and all sorts of genres are keeping me interested in learning more. I can frail on the banjo a bit as well, looking into developing the clawhammer technique though as I'm really interested in the rhythm components of music lately. My latest fixation has been playing the bass though. After learning some tunes and becoming fmailiar with the most basic scales, I've been checking out some Jazz progressions and general theory.

If I can remember to, I'll try to get a family picture of my instruments when I get home. I might also get a picture of some of my girlfriends instruments. She jams out on the sax and ocarina.

I play flute and clarinet and sing. I used to play piano and violin. I've been in the band, the jazz band, the orchestra, and the choir. I'm currently in choir. I did try guitar once, but found it wasn't my thing. Nearly everyone in my family plays an instrument. My parents got me into music.
For singing: anything but pop music
Flute and clarinet and everything else: anything really (unless it's really really slow. I hate having to play slow because most of the songs are fast and I'm used to that. )

I'm a cellist -- though I haven't had too much time to play recently, with my college not offering a music program.  I also took advanced music theory for a year and that was kind of one of the worst years of my life, haha.

I still dream of parallel fifths sometimes, and shudder.

My parents were big on making sure their kids all played instruments, and they kind of chose mine for me when I was in middle school.  I've taken years of tutoring since then and grown to really enjoy it!

I've played all kinds of pieces, though I do favor things from the romantic period.

I'll probably get really into it again within a month -- my fingers have been itching for a good session with my cello for a while now; I just have to get it from home to my dorm.

Me! ;) (you'd think so because of my name haha)

I currently hold all the piano performance diplomas (ARCT & LRCM) from the RCM Conservatory in Canada, as well as a Pedagogy dipoma. I also play a Chinese instrument known as the pipa, and I've completed all of the exam levels. I competed internationally in China last summer and got Bronze. ^_^

I also play the tenor sax, various percussion instruments, and the oboe.

I'm OBSESSED with romantic music - especially Chopin hehe.

I used to play clarinet for my high school band, but now I don't really have time to play an instrument (university is busy) :(

I could probably still play some of the simpler songs though.

I'm prominently a Pianist at heart, love to sing along to songs of all sorts of genres but I think it'd be a couple days re-acquaintance with a Trumpet, Trombone, Cello and Violin if I were to start playing them again. I'll edit this again later with a pic of my simple but still amazing Electric Keyboard. Should invest into a Cello again because I miss it the most but I don't think I'd be able to afford it for quite some time...

Wow, lots of replies and no guitarists, I don't think I've ever seen that happen before. :p

Woo, fellow choir guy right here! Mind you that was over 16 years ago now... probably not so great a singer these days!

Good stuff, you've got quite a catalogue of tunes to choose from as well. Have you ever thought about giving it a go on a viola or cello? Similar skillset, but generally a much different role.

Love cellos, they are haunting but beautiful sounding instruments. My parents never played much music, but they did get me the guitar that I got started out on. I wish my grandfather had of lived longer, he was apparently a master on the guitar and mandolin.

Very cool, congrats on the bronze medal! How rigourous of a training schedule did you have to have in order to get to where you are now? Awesome with the sax playing as well. My lady hasn't played recently but I've been really trying to get her back into it. I'd love to have a sax player to jam with.

Hopefully you'll find some time to pick it back up. Music's an excellent way to relax and get in touch with yourself.

Piano was always a fun instrument to jam around on. Understanding intervals is huge for it as well, since everything is laid out in a lovely straight line. :p

I'm an interchangeable violin and viola player, my first and primary of the two is the viola. In high school, I was an a Chamber Orchestra that went to National Competitions every other year and like two years ago, they went to an international young musician's competition in Prague and got third place (I'm still mad I graduated before they went international). When I was still in high school, I made it to all county's/area all-state/and all state my junior year but not my senior year. I miss those times.

I still play occasionally, but not in an orchestra setting since college yields no time for everything. I played in the symphony orchestra as a class for the first three semesters, but I was turned off by the lack of motivation by the other players. I'm not a fanatic practicer that goes into the practice rooms at least an hour a day, but I was so discouraged that most of the other members don't even look at the music before midterms (seating arrangements) are made. I was first chair in all three semesters and I didn't feel like I put my hardest. The teaching methods were robotic and static and even undrwhelming compared to the genius of a high school teacher I had.

As of now, I play around with sheet music I find from ichigos.com. Around Christmas season and when the fall semester ends, I volunteer at local concerts and ambiance troupes. Also the snooty side of my family likes having family concerts in someone's home once a year where we play any piece. For times like those, I just pick up something good from Bach's cello Suites to play on the viola or play my own compositions (I have basic music theory knowledge and my family would clap even if it's the crappiest thing I've ever heard.)

Thank you! Uhh I actually didn't practise a whole lot (probably around 2 hours a day for piano and around an hour for pipa), buuuut in the month or so before exams I would be up to 3-6 hours a day (6 hours in the panic week before exam day LOL) for piano and 2-3 for pipa.

Sax is amazing! Hopefully you'll be able to convince your lady to get back into it, because jamming is 200% fun. x)

This is the kind of parent I plan to be. Music and art are SO important, but are the least funded in the public school system. These things teach kids discipline, patience, and confidence. You have to really concentrate and practice to get better. I think performing music in front of a crowd is such a nerve wracking experience. It's good for people to have a little stress now and then.

I've played piano since I was in second grade, and played viola in middle school *high five Keil for viola*. When I was a teenager, I played guitar in a punk band with my family. I haven't played in a while, but my boyfriend is a music major for classical guitar. Piano is definitely my favorite. Music is a great way to express yourself, and I mostly feel anger all the time. You can bang the shit out of a piano.

I didn't know you played viola!

Another viola player here. Have played for 12 years, taught private lessons, majored in it my first way through university, blah blah blah. I also play violin, guitar, bass, piano, and can make a sad attempt at flute and clarinet.

I just bought my oldest (5) her first violin last month and am teaching her how to play ^_^

Seriously, I wasn't expecting the amount of people that play instruments so well suited for an orchestra setting. A lot of violin/viola/cello folks, some woodworks and brass up in this place too!

Drummer here! Got my first 5pc Ludwig drum set when i was 15. Been playing ever since. Not really into playing in a band, it's kind of my emotional release. If I'm upset, or whatever, i play for hours. Joey Jordison is my idle. Listening to him play is amazing. Don't really listen to music for the lyrics, i just listen for the beat, i think that's why i wanted to play the drums so bad. I'm into Rock/Metal. I enjoy singing as well. Not metal though. Slowish songs. Have a fear of singing in front of people, but my daughter seems to like it alot. :D

Joey's pretty awesome that's for sure. I've never been a big fan of his meaty bass drum (it's always reminded me of slapping a steak onto a counter), but there's no denying his technical prowess. Ever listen to Rush and/or Led Zeppelin? Different, but very awesome drummers. They say no one could regulate a groove like John Bonham.

I agree, Neil is a monster for sure, but not really into that kind of music. Great drummer though. Joey Jordison is just amazingly fast. His feet! :o Bass peddle sounds like a .50 cal machine gun they're so fast. There are a ton of great drummers. Man can only dream to be that epic.
