Oh, sorry. I didn't realize that you tell me how to think... Besides, there's not really anything you can do to change it. If he doesn't learn his lesson then he's going to fuck up and serve time.

If he learns his lesson and gets help then great.

Just throwing it out there: what I post is a reflection of my own thoughts--not others'.

Not sure you can ever "learn your lesson" when something like this happens :p

Then maybe you shouldn't quote me and direct your comment towards what I said.

I'm not saying he should have gotten off easy. I wish he had gotten jail time too. I'm just saying that there's not much you can do to change the verdict at this point SO either he goes off and finishes probation without a problem or he messes up and gets sent to jail.  Pretty much two roads and not much to argue about here.

All those poor families :/. Kid better spend the rest of his life contemplating, and, subsequently regretting his poor decisions.

"To the defense, the youth is himself a victim -- of "affluenza," according to one psychologist -- the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy."

So his problem is no one ever set limits for him. Alright, then it totally makes sense that he has little to no punishment for killing four people. I mean, why show him any limits now?!

another day, another rich people get away with crime. but 10 years probation still sound kinda harsh, though.

Anders Breivik, the guy who killed 77 people in Norway, only got 21 years. How fuck up is that?

i don't think norway is so experienced in handling these sorts of stuff. have you seen their prisons? they look even better than my house! really shows how rare crimes happening there.

Yes, and meanwhile this kid never even gets convicted of a crime and is thrown into RIKERS ISLAND, of all places, for three years.

What is really the point of putting a 16 year old in prison for a non-intentional crime? I understand a 10 year probation should match a 10 year driving ban.

I hate drink drivers but I don't see the point of incarnating a youth for the pure sake of revenge disguised as justice.

The US criminal system is largely about revenge though, not to mention a cheap source of labour. There's also little focus on rehabilitation, so this teenager is probably going to come out of jail in a decade as a hardened criminal.

But News 8 discovered the same judge sent a 14-year-old black boy to prison in March 2012 for killing just one person with a powerful punch to the ground.

I have a relative (real close) that committed a "crime" as a 14 year old.  He did his time in the juvenile system and then never did another thing else (that anyone knows about).  Of course, that was years ago and NOT IN TEXAS so he was considered a minor. Course, he was on tan side of the family.

Texas also is the second most populated state... so they have more people to execute.

16 executions this year so far in Texas out of 38 total for the entire US.

Yeah, that was maximum sentence a Norwegian court could have given. I think Norway is too trusting. Just before he killed those 77 people, he parked a truck bomb outside of a Norwegian govt building. In fact, Norway was the only western country where he could have done that. Other govt buildings have way better security measures.

He killed 4 and put 7 more lives in danger. One of his friends can't even speak or move and can only communicate by blinking. 11 lives total that he could have taken that night. How many people would he have had to kill for you to say you don't see the point of incarcerating him? He got drunk - three times the legal limit for people over 21-  and stupidly decided to go driving with seven other people in his car. Two of those seven were critically injured. C'mon. He deserves some time just for the sheer fact that he killed and could have killed so many others.

He needs to learn something from this, and I don't think being sent to a posh, $500,000 a year rehab center is going to do much for him except spoil him a little more. His parents apparently didn't teach him wrong from right so good job justice system - teaching him that hey, if you're rich and you blame it on your parents, then you get off. We're doing a great job of teaching him wrong from right.

The system has failed us. I think we can all agree that vigilante justice is permissible in this case.
