Ahem.

Also, I think people are misunderstanding what redlion wanted from this thread. The way I see it, he was looking for famous quotes which describes the cities.

Quite right. Thank you.

@ Frizzle , no idea what you're talking about.

@Ali, @Sweeney, hush about that amusement park and find something about being middle class in the home counties.

    God you're dim.

Europe is a huge place but most of it is metropolitan areas and you can to most places in a very short period of time. Ali and Joe were talking about how they could travel halfway across the country in a couple of hours as it's only a short distance. So to Europeans a 100 miles is a long distance. In comparison most yanks will do this daily as part of their commute. I couldn't imagine many people in the UK doing more than 20 at a push.

In contrast, the US is a very, very new country at only a couple of hundred years old. European civilisation has been around for millennia. Our very own Oxford university is older than the Aztec empire.

So to the Americans, 100 years is a long period of time whilst to most European countries, this barely scratches the surface of our history.

    You prick.

Um... I tried, but there aren't many about my hometown. I tried searching for Tampa Bay quotes and all I got was football stuff. So... here's some Florida things.

“The space center's proximity to my backyard came to signify an intersection between heaven and hell. Florida was somewhere between the two; it was America's phantom limb, a place where spaceships were catapulted out into the cosmos. Alligators emerged from brackish water. Vultures and hawks circled above. Mosquitoes patrolled the atmosphere at eye level. We shared an ocean with sharks and dolphins. There were no seasons, only variations of humidity. Time slithered, festering in a damp wake of recollections.

I believed in the Bermuda Triangle. I thought it would move in over Florida one night. By dusk an unknown force would vaporize us through a tear in the atmosphere. We'd be stuck, wandering in a parallel version of the same place, unaware that we were dead but dreaming.

    People came here to vanish.”
-Paul Kwiatkowski, And Every Day Was Overcast

“Here's what's not beautiful about it: from here, you can't see the rust or the cracked paint or whatever, but you can tell what the place really is. You see how fake it all is. It's not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It's a paper town." - John Green, Paper Towns.

“August in Florida is God's way of reminding us who's in charge.”

    You prick.

There's the Lee I know and love. I knew you wouldn't stay pleasant forever.

I'm not middle class enough to be home counties, just near them. :p

Probably the nearest I can get to my proper home is http://en.wikipedia..../Watership_Down. There you go, an entire book about home and bunnies.

There must be some Thomas Hardy quotes but I'm not digging out my copy of Tess to search for them. :p
