I think the site owners were having some medical/financial hardship, and there was at least one legal threat. It had so much potential! And it was the reason I first learned PHP.

Holy fuck I was on there as well!! Its such a shame it had to go down, it was a lovely little site ;_; The Magma pets on there were so nicely done too!!

I remember there used to be so many rip-offs of Neopets when I was younger. No idea now.

 

The closest thing I can come up with, really, is Gaia Online. It doesn't involve pets, but it's the same concept.

I rather like Khimeros...I play that mainly, then FR a bit.

 

(EDIT: Also Subeta...but I just play casually really on it, peeking in when I feel like and doing a little, but not getting overstressed with much.)

There's Marapets, it's like a Neopets knock-off.

I've heard that Wajas is kind of similar, though I've never gotten into it myself

 

Lioden has some aspects of neopets... except its more of a breeding simulator than an, uh...whatever neopets is now. There's also goatlings, but it takes a certain type to appreciate their aesthetic. Just go to the site, you'll see what I mean.

 

If you like playing a marketplace and customizing avatars(/pets) there's also gaiaonline.

Whoa, Subeta is still around? Dang. I might have to check that out again...

 

The missus plays something called Lioden and Howrse.

Don't know much about them personally, but she's on them several times per day every day. 

Might be worth checking out.
