I ended up continuing with the zapping anyways, on the same pet even. After a while I got a lousy species/colour zap, and had to turn it back to its old species with a buyable MP. xD

 

But, after that something nice happened: The next two zaps which changed my pet's colour, were both nice colours. Indeed, now my pet has a rather exclusive colour. I feel loved by the Ray now. Except that it keeps taking away my poor pet's defence points, and it doesn't have a lot to begin with.
