BURLINGTON -- Two Lewis Mills High School students set off an aerosol "stink bomb" in the school cafeteria during lunch Tuesday, sickening a dozen people, police said.
Eleven students and a teacher were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment after they complained of skin rashes, irritated eyes and breathing trouble, Region 10 school officials said.
It wasn't immediately clear whether any of the 12 had to be hospitalized.
The two students believed responsible for the prank were turned over to Burlington police, who charged the juveniles with second-degree breach of peace.
The suspects, both 15, were not identified because of their ages. Their cases were referred to juvenile court in New Britain, police said.
School Principal Carissa Niehoff was unavailable for comment about the incident and any possible administrative sanctions.
"It was two students who let off a noxious, really smelly substance," said Jeff Linton, the district's curriculum director.
Police said the incident occurred at 12:40 p.m. as district officials were preparing for an afternoon visit by a principal from Mills' sister school in Taishan, China.
The incident did not disrupt that visit, which began about 2 p.m. in the region's middle school adjacent to Lewis Mills.
Alicia York, 17, a senior from Harwinton, said she smelled the substance even though she wasn't in the cafeteria.
"I was walking down the hall, and it smelled really bad," York said.
She said the odor made her slightly lightheaded, but she did see other students with more serious reactions.
"Some people had rashes. I saw one girl's arm and it was covered in a rash," York said.
School officials responded quickly to the incident, telling students via the intercom that anyone with any health problem related to the cafeteria incident should go to the school nurse's office.
People were brought out of school on stretchers and put into ambulances, summoned to the school by regional officials.
The students and faculty were taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Bristol Hospital and UConn Medical Center in Farmington.
Superintendent Paula Schwartz sent out a letter for students to take home at day's end to explain what happened at the school.
