I used to think that the people on daytime talk shows were just a small percentage of people and others watched the shows because they were so stupid. After attending a large junior high public school for about a month, my view has changed completely. I truly I had no idea of the massive amount of unintelligent minds there are that attend public school as I have been at a secluded catholic private school all my life before hand.

In my classes, even my Pre-AP classes, people do not understand very simple subjects the teachers attempt to teach them. For example, in my Pre-AP Algebra 1 class every student except for about four have trouble with simple expressions (2x+2/y with x=7 and y=9) and that it takes days for them to finally grasp the concept.

Along with not knowing their basics in school, they are also ignorant about common senses. Fights breaking out over misunderstandings are not unusual to see every day. Even without remembering most of the things I was taught last year I was able to pass the final exams because of knowing how to take a test. It really saddens me that they can actually fail these incredibly easy tests. sad.gif

Copying is a major dilemna in all of my classes. If over half the class did not copy from me in some way their grades would be ranging from the 20's-30's. It agitates me that if they see an answer on my paper then raise their hand and say it that the teacher praises them while the said student says over and over "I'm so smart".

So, to get to the point of the topic: Why do you think public school are crummy?
Of course, not all public schools are as bad as the one I am in, but I'm sure it's the case with many.

I personally think that there are many contributors to their failure. A major one I have noticed is that teachers are afraid of failing students! The district threatens to fire all of them and close down the school if too many of them fail. If you do not fail students, they will get into their head that school is a pushover and they can depend on the teachers being afraid of losing their job and passing them. In my Pre-AP English class, my teacher is offering about three extra credit assignments (About a two-three paragraph essay per assignment) to bring up students with 20's and 30's to a passing grade. If you do not fail students, they will not be motivated to strive to learn more to get that passing grade.

Of course, it is not all the teacher's fault. I actually put most of the blame on parents. The parents of the students do not care if they do well in school. If the parents would actually give a shit about their child's education they would achieve so much more in life. I belive that in most cases, a child growing up in a nurturing family in both love and education would be able to pass at most private schools regardless of their actual intelligence.

Some of the blame also lands on the harder working and smarter students such as myself. It makes me sick that my answers are being used over the entire room, but peer pressure gets the best of me. Sadly enough, many of the friends I have made were because of copying.

A large amount of people might say that public school fails because of lack of funds and they blame individual higher ups that pass laws, but I don't believe that is so. It could be that the staff does not know how to manage money, and those are issues in the school itself, not the public school system.

I'll stop my rant because any more or not a single person will read it on the site. tongue.gif So why do you think public schools are lousy?

Dude, thats a barked up middle school.

Want to know what I find funny? Its the exact opposite in my town. Our high school and middle school do a good job of placing people where they should be, and our teachers do a good job. The only local private school has much lower standards than ours, and people who make the switch are generally much farther behind.

I dont know about normal classes, but Ive always been advanced. Ive never seen anyone grasp the concept of the equation you listed. Normally it will take a day or so, after that its good. But, like I said, Im in advanced classes (We dont have any of these "Pre-AP" courses, so I wouldnt know where they are compared to others), but the other levels work at a much slower pace.

And yes, we do have people fail. They are generally the lazy, troublemaking type.

It really depends on the school. Thats all I really have to say. Some public schools (Like mine) are top notch. I think 99% of our school passes the standardized testing provided by the state, so I dont know dry.gif. They had the results in the paper one day and our school system was one of the best in the state.

Wow, that was amazingly stupid. Not everyone is stupid, you're just in a shitty place... and no it isn't the same way with most... they're schools dry.gif Not some kind of genius lab. Prep schools could have similar arguements made against them.

You live in the Dallas Metropolitan area, right jpt? It really sucked when I went to school in the DFW metro. You could write a perfect essay, but still get a 60 because you weren't "creative enough." What I dislike about some of these public schools is their requirement to overacheive, even if the person has it right, and their view on the class' students. Private schools allow for the kids to adjust to the correct learning environment for them, but this is very relative to what kind of person you are. Public school is perfectly fine for most of the people, but there are quite a few people who do not have the sufficent environment for credibility.

Private schools and Correspondence schools are very good, the only problem is money, and whether they actually need it or not. Luckily, some schools have acted up to create programs for these kind of people. However, the people in the program are often just football players, which result in labeling the program "Retarded Class."

    Its simple really

Public schools have a larger teacher to student ratio than a private school would have. So while your getting hand held through the material by a teacher in a class of 15 your much better off.

While in a public school there is a more of the 1 teacher to 25 students. Alot less time to baby the ones that take longer to grasp the knowledge.

i live in england so school system is slightly different

i go to gramar school and we have about 30 students to 1 teacher so the ratio isnt the problem, i have never known someone to fail their GCSE's (main tests at end of compulsary education) at this school

Oh really Frizzle? To my knowledge there is no difference from public school to state school in Texas. If you're talking about the free schools that you have to take entrance exams to get into, I'll understand that. If you did not mean those schools, I suggest you stop posting in subjects you lack knowledge of.
Now that I read it again, I also think you might be talking about the USA's schools and that makes no sense if you meant that. Especially if you have read the other posts in this topic saying how awful mine is compared to them.

I think that unless students are in a competitive high school, they usually do not feel compelled to be overachievers and really do well in school. I go to a high school where tens of thousands of students take an exam to try to get into, but only the top 250 or so students make it in. Nearly everyone in my school really cares about school, and tend to be on the brighter side. There aren't students that fall behind and fail classes, really - they either get the concepts the first time around, or they get tutoring. Unfortunately, some schools are filled with mostly students who don't care about their futures or don't understand the importance of education. I would say that the students are the fault behind failing schools.

I've gone to Public school my entire life. I feel as though I am way ahead of most people. Needless to say I scored a 22 on the ACT in 7th grade and I am taking Precal as a Sophmore. I am also going to the top public school in the state of Kentucky.

Well I don't care about your system there since the Americans screw everything up practically, but here a public school is a state school.

And you guys should really think about how good your schools are compared to mine.

I was just saying Americans have a screwed up system. Don't get pissy over it.

And trust me Ange ask danupsher or Leo on this site, they'll explain how toilets next to classrooms, no supplies for a year and substitutes for tutors are just the tip of the iceberg.

Erm trust me these toilets were in a horrible condition, mud, water, feaces and urine all smothered everywhere, with paper and shit all over the floor, and it made the classrooms stink.

Also kids have been caught fcking, doing cocaine, cannabis, pills and smoking in class.

I don't know about the toilets but I know that Cody's done all of those except fcking in his own classroom xD hmmm... well.. not cannabis yet, I don't think. But in America people do that kind of crap too unfortunately. Mostly in the inner cities I hear though. Kids will meet up in the bathroom and... you know... meet up tongue.gif Also people do drugs in there as well. In the suburbs though at least where I lived it wasn't much of a problem. Most people did was weed and they went off campus during lunch to do that. I have heard of smoking occuring in class though with some people as well. Quite honestly, though I haven't lived your life I will say... teenagers will be teenagers? Americans I think are just as bad with the drugs and sex issue. 'Course I could be wrong.

Schools all have their seedier side. I went to a fairly posh grammar school, and there were girls getting expelled for cocaine, dealing weed, having crowbars in lockers.. And there was a lot of pregnancy tongue.gif
