Right now im on my fathers comp which is extremely slow. My computer keeps restarting itself every 5 minutes so I think im going to have to reload Win XP onto it. My question is, is that all its going to take? If I put in a WIN XP cd to reload will it basically erase everything and make the comp better? LOL I know kinda a noobish question but this new comp is nothing like my old one where I would redo it all the time. HELP someone!

To start things off, how about some system specs.
Then when you start you pc does it beep if it does how many times.
Have you tried booting in safe mode?
Do you recive any error/s both when restarting or booting.
Do not use quick boot in the bios look though the boot diag and see if it give you any errors.
Some times after a computer has had new software loaded/installed it needs to boot muitply times make sure that you have allowed it to do so at least 15 times inoder to make sure.

If none of the following apply then do these in this order.
    1. Run spin rite checks for hard drive problems; and fixes them if it can.
    2. If 1 couldn't fix it then reinstall OS I suggest you not use windows’ formatting utility that comes with windows I would use some thing like wipe drive. You don’t have though it’s just personal preference.

Alright when it starts up it beeps once. It has started up about 11 times. Once it loads up, 5 minutes pass and it restarts. Also something I forgot to mention is everytime it loads up it says Windows has recovered from serious system error and do I wish to send a report. If I click yes or no, a minute later another one pops up. Im looking around the internet to maybe find a win xp boot disk or something. When I boot in safe mode it does work but I cannot open up any applications.
As for running spin rite, the computer wont even let me on long enough to open so Ill try number 2 thanks for all your help smile.gif

Does the comp tell you that a process has been closed (NT AUTHORITY SYSTEM, or some such) then give you a timer? If so..

Change the computer date to a few years ago. Watch what happens biggrin.gif
    Now, update Windows.

If you don't want it to keep on rebooting and shit.. follow these instructions:

    -Right click My Computer
    -Click Advanced tab
-Click setting under Startup and Recovery
    -Uncheck Restart automatically

So this should solve your problem... but you might get a bluescreen once in a while lol.. so I would ultimatly recodmend completely reformatting your disc and reinstalling xp. Just backup some of your important files.

Try repairing windows xp instead of reinstalling it.

Test the RAM - buy a new power supply.

    if you reinstall

and choose quick reformat while in windows XP setup

it only reformats your windows folder...your old files remain

but any virus/spyware/malicious file is deleted

your old programs(some) will work (they will create new registry paths)

Actually this sounds like a hardware problem!

Well, I think what's happening here is one of a few things...

    Overheated computer

Dusty, yes Dusty, my computer got so dusty the fan wasn't spinning fast enough with the weight of the dust tongue.gif

corroded RAM, or just malfunctioning RAM.

My advice is to re-install windows if you still have the manufacturer supplied reinstall disk, if not, don't worry about it, just go to Fry's or Newegg.com and buy some more RAM.

To check which kind of RAM you need, go under the start menu, click 'run' and type 'dxdiag' which stands for Direct X Diagnostics, it will tell you some pretty nifty stuff ohmy.gif

And, if NONE of that works, call a computer-guy. sorry.gif I wouldn't recommend customer support unless you have a Gateway (FYI, Emachines is owned by Gateway) and use their IM support on another computer, otherwise, costumer service isn't worth the effort. So just get out your old-fashioned yellow pages (because yellowbook takes longer than 5 minutes) and look up a local computer technician thumbsup.gif

My sentiments exactly! A power Supply usually wouldn't have this sort of affect though.

One more thing to try is to remove the RAM from you computer, and boot it. You should here a series of Beeps, if you hear no beeps when you boot your DeRAMed computer, that usually means it's the motherboard thumbsup.gif
