The cops shouldn't just lose their jobs, they should be put in jail for that shit. I saw another video someplace where a woman got tazed during a traffic stop because she was simply bitching at them. She got zapped 3 times for 'not listening' even though she was clearly saying that she could not get up.
OMG are you serious??? This really needs to be addressed with it seems like a major problem.

When's the last time you heard a story, this hyped up, having to do with a white kid and police brutality?
Uh, the last time would have been a kid that was tailed for three months because of the books he checked out of a library (which turned out to be for a research paper relating to DHS).
Cliché and annoying "you haven't been in their shoes, so shut up" messages aside, where the fuck does the patriot act have any place in it? Sounds like incoherent mumble jumble. The patriot act sucks dick, but that's another story. People screw up. Besides, the Los Angeles (incl university ones that aren't related) police suck.
Ugh. I'd say its because the patriot act allows for blatant disregard of citizen's rights, as well as racial profiling. Did you happen to catch the kid's last name? I couldn't say it in a million years (not to be racist) and his skin tone probably reflected that name. Who did the campus police single out for their "random" search? Not the Nearly 50% of the population that was white, but the much less common brown kid.
On the message board that Alex posted (tuckermax.com, a conservative BB) an Alum stated that she never had trouble with the campus police, even when she didn't have her card. She said that they were usually very lenient about it, and if you said you were sorry and wouldn't forget it again, they usually let you off. She graduated in '99. Guess what has changed since then? A national awareness campaign touting the dangers of foreigners and immigrants.
Fucking disgusting this was.
Lee, they could have been justified in using the tazer the first time to subdue him (although I wouldn't, as the level of force was unjustified for the level of risk). After that, his body has been immobilized (or at least, he has no control over it) and the officers had no need to continue to use it.
How would the cops have dealt with the situation thirty years ago when tasers didn't exist? They would have thrown him on the ground, searched him, cuffed him, and then led him out of the building. The same process could have been used today.
When you watched the video, he only shouted after the first shot. He said some random things, 'fuck you', 'here's your patriot act, abuse of powers', etc, etc. But after that shot, he was completely unable to respond physically or verbally. At one point the cameraman actually grew some balls and stepped out from behind the reception desk and got a shot of the student lying on the ground convulsing in pain. He had no control over his actions.

That is absolutely sick. Such repeated use of a Taser can cause permanent nerve damage!
My friend had to be tasered in order to pass his training for use of a Taser. It allowed them to know how it felt.
If their training of a Taser is anything like the police academy here, they would know the extreme pain and effects that they can cause.
I have no words that could express how horrible those officers acted.
I have run into many great law enforcement officials that were very helpful, so not all are bad. These officers deserve a dishonorable discharge and a large fine.
they didn't use it the way it normally is to sustain a criminal (immobilization), they used the drive stun setting in the taser, which you stick the taster onto the person and shock the certain body with low electricity. it does NOT affect other parts of the body; and the police officers would not be shocking him in the legs if they were telling him to stand. this of course is not supposed to be used at all until there is a possible threat, and in this case there clearly was one. i myself have been shocked in this setting of the taser and i can personally say that i didn't find it painful, it hurt for the time that i was shocked for and then after that there were no lingering effects. just don't want anyone to think that it was "impossible for him to stand up", because it definitely isn't.
and another thing, the police officers did try to grab him and push him out; he screamed get off me and ran FURTHER into the library instead of leaving.
i think there could of been other measures taken for this, but the police does have a point; it was past 11pm and the rules of this library is no one without their card is allowed. (according to the article ANYONE can go into the library before 11; after that it's students only) it is a security precaution, who knows what this guy's intentions were. consider yourself in their situation, some arabic guy refusing to leave at nearly midnight. you can call it unjust, police brutality, but it's the law and the police officers are trained to do so.
kinda odd how this guy can manage to declare the patriot act, yet can't even move 5 feet towards the door? imo this guy was trying to start some race riot, no doubt he overreacted.
k
ooh another thing, pretty dumb how those kids were asking for the badge number in the middle of that crisis. are they expected to just halt the whole thing and take out a pen and paper to satisfy these kids?

This is the only part I want to talk about, because you've obviously got your mind set that the cops were justified in their methods.
What crisis? The guy was lying on the floor in handcuffs being tasered, and they couldn't stop and answer a rational question from a calm and obviously benign bystander? Get real.

Plus there was a post in that forum that Alex posted of someone saying that the police are normally very good in this, so I think that the kid probably was asking for shit, different reports give you different angles is all, we're being led to believe from that article Tet posted that the kid did practically nothing wrong, bah. Kinda with Lee on this one, surprisingly o-O.

no no no, i do not think their methods were justified in the least. i think the situation could of been handled WAY differently, but people are overdramaticizing to the extreme.
when they were asking for the badge number (in the library) the victim was not handcuffed, but laying on the floor. there were two officers & if the "victim" turned out to have a malicious threat, what would happen if one of the officers just stopped everything, got a pen out and satisfy these people? it's a security precaution and you need to consider the worst possible situation. maybe i'm more tensed with these kind of things living in the city, being the terror threats so high here..but i dunno.
once again, you need to consider the worst possible situation.
