Texas Boy Hangs Himself After Watching Saddam

Police and family members said a 10-year-old boy who died by hanging himself from a bunk bed was apparently mimicking the execution of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Sergio Pelico was found dead Sunday in his apartment bedroom in the Houston-area city of Webster, said Webster police Lt. Tom Claunch. Pelico's mother told police he had previously watched a news report on Saddam's death.

"It appears to be accidental," Claunch said. "Our gut reaction is that he was experimenting."

An autopsy of the fifth-grader's body was pending.

Julio Gustavo, Sergio's uncle, said the boy was a happy and curious child.

He said Sergio had watched TV news with another uncle on Saturday and asked the uncle about Saddam's death.

"His uncle told him it was because Saddam was real bad," Gustavo said. "He (Sergio) said, 'OK.' And that was it."

Sergio's mother, Sara Pelico DeLeon, was at work Sunday while Sergio and other children were under the care of an uncle, Gustavo said. One of the children found Sergio's body in his bedroom.

Police said the boy had tied a slipknot around his neck while on a bunk bed. Police investigators learned that Sergio had been upset about not getting a Christmas gift from his father, but they don't believe the boy intentionally killed himself.

Clinical psychologist Edward Bischof, of California, said children Sergio's age mimic risky behaviors they see on TV such as wrestling or extreme sports without realizing the dangers. He said TV appeared to be the stimulant in Sergio's case.

"I would think maybe this kid is trying something that he thinks fun to act out without having the emotional and psychological maturity to think the thing through before he acts on it," Bischof said.

Family members held a memorial for the boy Wednesday in the apartment complex activity center. Gustavo said the family is trying to put together enough money to send Sergio's body to Guatemala for burial.

"I don't think he thought it was real," Gustavo said of Saddam's hanging. "They showed them putting the noose around his neck and everything. Why show that on TV?"

Damn thats really messed up. It just shows that sometimes you have to be careful in explaining major events like this to your children and be careful what they watch on T.V.

There has been a shit load of crazy things happening over this hanging. did you guys know that Iraqi officials hanged Saddam's dog for no reason? As if the dog had anything to do with what he did. Scary world.

That's so sad... just goes to show how easily influenced children are. Are they certain the child didn't feel guilty for something? It sounds to me that sicne the uncle said that Saddam was hung for being bad maybe he felt he should be too because he felt that he did something bad. I think they should investigate that post-haste.

actually, when I was ten I was playing hide and seek, but today kids don't play hide'n'seek or some good games anymore, they stay on front of the computer, talking of anithing at msn because they don't got any real thing to talk -_-
I mean, I don't know there, but the kids here, at seven, already know what sex is, and a lot of those dirty words o.Ô
When I was seven the maximum I could speak was: "Idiot" for my sisters XD(obviously, wasn't idiot in english XD I translated, but to be in portuguese just put an a after T so is "idiota" XD*portuguese dumb classes*)

I feel bad for the family, but they said that the news shouldn't show stuff like that on TV. How many kids actually watch the frickin' news? I know when I was 10 I sure didn't. That, and they cannot be concerned about every single kid who is not properly educated on safety. The news is not solely to blame and the same goes for the parents or the kid. It appears to be a comedy of errors on everyones account 1we8.gif It could be argued that showing a hanging like that COULD put ideas in kids heads, and the parents COULD have educated the child that noose + neck + short drop + sudden stop = death.

And I believe children are very capable of learning how to handle things that are inherently dangerous, tying a noose and hanging yourself is one I do not consider very high on the list because you cannot accidentally do it. You may not know the consequences, but you cannot accidentally do it. I know a father who is educating his very young son about firearms. We went out shotgun shooting and that little boy was firing 20 gauge shot guns by himself 1we8.gif The gun was taller than he was xD

LOL...I think it's intended for deer...not to mention we live in the country so there aren't streets. Humorous nonetheless. smile.gif

"I saw this one guy take 7 arrows on LOTR...let's see how many you can take Billy."

Pretty much the same thing this kid with the rope did.

That's just ridiculous. Every ten year old on Earth should know that would kill them. By the time I was 10, I knew not to jump off my bunkbed with a rope around my neck.

I remember in gym class in elementary school we had this sicko teacher who would always be obsessed with telling us not to horse play in the gym and he would post news articles all the time about kids who were playing around and died because of it. One of them was this kid who saw wrestling on TV and tried to do a move and killed his sister. So yea i can imagine this is exactly like that. for those who say its a matter of stupidity i really dont think so.

Anybody know how hanging kills you by chance? Like is it cuz it breaks your neck or something or it just seals off your trachea and suffocates you?

Tetiel has risen a good point there. Hopefully its not though because the way the media works they will potray his uncle as a murderer

I can't believe something like this happened, but I guess somewhere I knew it.
How come people let their kids watch something like Saddam being killed on the tv?
When I was the boys age I wouldn't even know what was going on in the world because I would be way too busy playing with friends outside, or playing with my barbies cool.gif

I guess the boy wanted to experiment, maybe he did know it would kill him so he did it in a slow way. I don't know how to explain, maybe he didn't let him fall but just wanted to hang himself in a "slow" way and then when he had "enough" he
wanted to go back standing on something. But he couldn't anymore and nobody checked on him or heard him.
    That could be possible too.
I hope yall know what I mean, don't know how to explain it in another way xD

And about the dog, that's just not good either. But that is the way people are, they erase everything that had to do with Saddam. Nobody would want a dog that has been with Saddam. They probably think Saddam learned that dog how to kill or something.
But still, it's a sad thought they treated the dog that way.

Oh how sad sad.gif. Poor kid, but really they're too young to be allowed to watch that sort of thing, even if it is just the noose going around his neck it's clearly given him ideas. Poor lad, he may not have even understood that Saddam was real, whereas films and that he might have watched aren't, so just assumes that he'd have been okay. Especially if he saw more in films then he did with Saddam or something like that.
