QUOTE
New York lauds subway rescuer

NEW YORK - A man's daring rescue of a teen who fell on the subway tracks earned him the unique title ``the hero of Harlem'' on Thursday, plus $10,000 from Donald Trump and a trip to Disney World.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg bestowed the title upon Wesley Autrey as he presented him with the city's highest award for civic achievement, calling the 50-year-old construction worker ``a great man - a man who makes us all proud to be New Yorkers.''

Past recipients of the bronze medallion have included Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali and Willie Mays.

On Tuesday, Autrey saw Cameron Hollopeter, a 19-year-old film student, suffering a seizure while waiting for a train. After stumbling down the platform, Hollopeter, of Littleton, Mass., fell onto the tracks with a train approaching.

Autrey, traveling with his two young daughters, said something needed to be done and he thought: ``I'm the only one to do it.''

He jumped down to the tracks, a few feet below platform level, and rolled with the young man into a drainage trough between the rails as the train came into the 137th Street/City College station.

Train cars passed over Autrey and Hollopeter with only a couple of inches to spare, but neither man suffered any harm from the incident. Hollopeter, hospitalized for his medical condition, was in stable condition on Thursday.

He jumped the platform to save the guy even with the train incoming. Thats gotta take some real cojones. He got some pretty nice reward shit too for that.

Would you have the balls to do something that risky for someone you didnt even know or have done something like that already?

Point and laugh tongue.gif Seriously though my sister is timid, she crosses the street the same day everyday because she's scared of the other side of the street. She stays 50 feet away from the metro when it comes

No I wouldnt have the balls.
See, I could lie and say I do just so everyone here thinks higher of me (if they even buy it laugh.gif ) but I wont. So no. I dont have the balls to risk dying for an utter stranger who could be the next docter to save a childs life, or a rapist.

And Im just a bit cautious. sad.gif

He didn't know he was going to get that stuff.

I think I would, if I didn't think about it and just did it. If I had any (literally any) time to think about it, I'd probably chicken out.

Nobody knows if what they would do unless they're actually put in that kind of situation...

I'd like to think that i'd be able to do something like that but hopefully we'll never have to find out.

The only thing even remotely like that is save a drowning toddler. I was at a pool party, some teenage girls who were "Watching" after the toddler were just ignoring it and it fell in the deep end of the pool wacko.gif

Like several other people have said, I would love to think I would do that, and I think I very well could, but you can never be sure until the moment is there, and with any luck we will never have to find out.

I might scream, jump off the platform and attempt to drag him back, but I wouldn't be able to think that quick and get into a trough XD He'd be screwed if that were me trying to save him...

This is the type of situation that no one can say for sure. I would like to think that I would, but when time comes down to it I don't know if I could. This guy is a great man for having the courage to jump down and protect the kid but you also have to take in the fact that his kids where watching.

Honestly.. I have no idea. I guess it depends on the situation.

And I don't think it's a question of if I would have the guts to do it... it's if I would be able to? I would want to help and I would try and do everything I could to help but I don't know if I would be physically and mentally capable of doing it.

I know in a situation like that man was in, I would've probably froze in shock or wouldn't have know how I would be able to save that guy even if I wanted to.

he was having an interview near on park av, he was even signing autographs..ididn't bother to get one

i would of done it because i have been through the subway tracks many times and do know some good ways to hide from an incoming train..and i would never be able to just stand there and watch. i value other people's lives more than myself and if it at the expense of my own, so be it i suppose. (don't get me wrong, i wouldn't do something that is flat out stupid..but if i think i could help i definitely would.

Its not all about saying that we would help if we could. I am sure 90% of us would have helped if we would have known the outcome. (Other ten percent includes lee) but how many people actually think and react fast enough to actually have made such a major decision in such a short amount of time. I am sure that it was mainly just adrenaline working, but how many of would have been able to do it.

Definitly. I wouldn't be able to live with myself seeing a person get splattered by a train, knowing that I could've stopped him from dying.

Depends how much I believe in my physical self. If I was a physically active person, then sure, but if I was some lazy fatass, then no way would I risk it. Not to mention my flab would've meant the train would've hit me anyways. tongue.gif

Hell no, and I'm sure 99% of the people on this board wouldn't. Nature would kick in and we wouldn't do it.
