Velvet Revolver — Scott Weiland wanted the band to be called Velvet while Slash wanted Revolver. The two compromised.

I always thought that the name dint make too much sense

Fountains of Wayne — Named after a New Jersey lawn ornament store.

I visited there when I went to see some relatives. It's a very nice store.

    QUOTE
CKY — An abbreviation of Camp Kill Yourself; a non-existent horror film. Deron Miller, the band's lead singer thought this would make the perfect title for a movie, as he is a massive fan of the "sleep away camp" series of films. Shortened to CKY because the full title would be too large and considered innapropriate for billboards.

Another intersting one. Most people, including myself, think it originated from the phrase "FUCK YOU"

If the name is trademarked or whatever then they'd have to change it, I guess.

If something is trademarked you can't use it for a band name. Take Relient K for example (who sadly isn't on this list). One of the band members had an old beat up Plymouth Reliant K which they decided to name their band after. To do this without having to pay any trademark fees or whatever they just changed the "a" to and "e".

Man, I knew I was right. My 5th grade music teacher flat out told me I was wrong when I said the Beatles took their name as a tribute to the Crickets. That bitch. dry.gif

Incubus — picked at random from a dictionary before a show. Incubus is a demon that seduces women into having sex to spawn more Incubi while they are asleep. Female version is Succubus. They liked the name because it had sex in the definition, and it stuck.

lol how typical of guys like us tongue.gif

They all chose random words because they wanted to focus on their music and not on having a really cool name. I read it in an interview a while ago.

I heard an Xfm show talking about band names. The way to test whether a band name will work is to see if you can imagine a voiceover in a stadium introducing them, for example: "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage... THE WHO!"
Some names just sound iconic, some are smart, most good names are short. Random, funny or ironic names never work.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage.. SMALL LEAKS SINK SHIPS!"

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS!"

"Please welcome to the stage, the one, the only, CHUMBAWUMBA!"

See? Those bands were never destined to be big. Someone actually sat there and said "Yes, I think Ladyfuzz is the perfect name for our band" biggrin.gif

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is random, and I'd probably say they're successful.

Not success on a stadium-filling level... when they can be compared to iconic bands. Think of names like Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Oasis. They work and you can imagine them playing Live Aid or something. Can you really imagine billions tuning in on tv to watch Live 8 and thousands falling silent as "Please welcome to the stage.. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus!"

If we're using random names for success, well, I guess the Arctic Monkeys are bigger wink.gif

The arctic monkeys are awesome! ....how can they be "silly little boy pop"? That makes no sense lol

Muse are great too, didn't think black holes and revelations was all that good though....the singles were good (hence why they became singles lol) but the rest was a bit 'same old, same old' for my liking lookaround.gif
