Downloads System Maintenance

In the last couple of days, some work has been done on the downloads section. Here are the changes that are either done or will be finalized tomorrow:
  • Downloads Section Now RTF-Friendly:
A lot of users were getting errors with adding, editing, or approving programs when the editor is set under the Rich Text Editor. I've now fixed the DL system up so that it forces the editors to operate under Standard mode. This way, there will no longer be any RTF-related errors and everyone will be able to add programs without problems now.

  • New Bug Tracker System:
In an effort to boost program quality here at Neocodex, I have created a basic bug reporting system for the programs. A lot of it has been done today but the rest will be finished up tomorrow. At this point in time, bug report filing capabilities are finished, but the display section for developers needs to be finished. A basic version will be available to use very soon, and you will notice that over time the system will evolve to better suit the specific needs of the site. FAQs will be created as soon as possible for how to file bug reports, and how to view reports filed against your programs.

  • Automatic Bug Quotas for Tracking System:
In the beginning stages of development of the bug tracking system, bug quotas will NOT be enforced. This means that people can file 900 bug reports for your program, but it will not automatically be unapproved. We may choose to implement automatic bug quotas in the future however, once we get a good system going. If we see the amount is outrageous, we will manually disable your program and let you know about it. wink.gif
  • Various Programming Leader Tools and Improvements:
To better inform those who get their programs unapproved by staff, automatic PM notification has now been integrated into the unapproval process. If the staff member so chooses, they can fill in a reason for the program to be unapproved and notification will be sent to the author. Programming Leaders and up can now delete programs without going into the Edit screen first.

Functions that are planned for the future include:
  • CodexChecks Live User Tracking:
To combat the possibility of different users running programs under the same Neocodex account, live usage tracking will be implemented. When you use any of Neocodex's programs, usage logs are automatically stored. What this automated system will do is compare your program usage with any past records it has stored and if the discrepancy between identities is significant enough, it will place a red flag on your account and the matter will be investigated by Neocodex staff. If the discrepancy is found to be significant enough, the account will be suspended from using any programs here. So please make sure that you aren't giving out your Neocodex account to anyone else, and if you are, now's the time to inform that person to make their own account.
  • Added security in validation process:
When the new version of the Neocodex Check is released (version 3.4.0), it will take advantage of a few additional security features when validating your Neocodex account. Unforunately, I can't reveal any of these procedures, but I can only reveal that there will be more security embedded in the checks with the new version. All of these measures ensure that developers who release their programs here will not get them leaked to other sites.
  • Comprehensive guides:
I have a plan to get some guides remade or created on how to operate certain parts of the downloads section. The area I plan to target specifically is the installation and usage of the CodexChex client, since I know for a fact that Mumei and I receive a lot of questions pertaining to the installation of the CodexChex client. We may even choose to go the multimedia way with videos on how to install the CodexChex and get your programs working. The usability of our programs needs a bit of work in my opinion, and there are many approaches we can take to make it easier for everyone. What point is there of having programs if not everyone can use them?
That's all for now. Keep on the lookout for updates on further improvements. smile.gif

I dislike the automatic unapproval by bug reports.
You know full well that most of the people who leech our programs can barely string a sentence together, let alone work out an issue with a program.
I can't help but feel we'll get a huge amount of "bug" reports for user-generated errors.

Hm...maybe the bug reports should have automatic leech write off...so that if someone with less than 10 posts files a bug report, it just gets deleted. That way, leechers won't be able to destroy a program by mistake when they can't seem to get it to work because they didn't download the library files...and so on.

It might help for programs that don't work with the new layout, however. A lot of people don't seem to understand what that means, so they keep saying 'it won't work'. If the program was down, they couldn't complain about it, no?

Maybe, in the future a bug report can be coded into Codex Checks itself, that way Users would just have to click a "send bug report" button, and it would be automatically logged. there would be filters on the other side, throwing out any errors that would occur if the library files were not installed.

Maybe only count bug reports from advanced or possibly private? (regular members can send out reports but they won't automatically stop people from using the programs/can be filtered out by the author)

True, no offense to regular members, but usually they have no idea what they are doing when they run the programs, like they do not have required files and such, etc. Getting the reports from Advanced, Private, and Retired wuld be good. Maybe we should have a bug testers group for the programs area.

If you follow directions and install all required files there shouldnt be that many problems from what I see here not installing all the required files and folowing directions is most of the peoblems so this seems like a very good idea to me

Heh, that's one of the things we discussed in a programmer's meeting a while back.... integrating the bug system right into the CodexChex.

Thanks. To an extent, we have something like this built in already (as we store the logs like I said), but there's no automatic comparison between records as of yet. It all has to be done manually, which is extremely tedious.

Anyways, there will be two more hours of maintenance on the downloads section this morning (or this evening if you're on the other side of the planet as me). If you see errors, just be as patient as possible. tongue.gif

then again, if they are too lazy to read, I'm sure all the noobs will do is make a topic saying "durr, program no worky. what me do now?"

    An equally fair point.
But then, people are far more likely to make more effort in the endeavour to complain for the sake of complaining, rather than working to solve the problem alone.
We'd probably get bug reports and HALP topics tongue.gif

Well, in the end...there's not much to be done about n00bs. They're really simple, and all that they want to do is annoy the hell out of everyone. If they can't complain on the support boards, then they'll go elsewhere to complain. Maybe you can stop some of them...but I dunno. Perhaps it should be made so that people without any posts or topics made can't post in the support boards, or they can't post anywhere until they make the topic saying 'hello'. That way, n00bs wouldn't be able to to enter into a support board and whine anymore...although they may actually put forth the effort to make a board saying 'hello' so they could complain.

I don't understand them...they put in so much effort to annoy people o.O Why not just do what you gotta do?

I really say that we should make a 30 non-spam post count rule, so then you can use the programs. So when every n00b gets 30 posts then he/she can use the programs. It will benefit to the number of posts NeoCodex has on the bigboards place, and it will keep most leechers out of the site. And in the time they make 30 posts, they will probably learn more about how to use the programs. And with all of the bug reports issued, and all of the answers given, we should make a FAQ about them somewhere where every n00b can see them. Would be much more organized than all of these people posting in the help section asking WHAT IS THIS ERROR!!! blink.gif and all of that. Anybody agree?

They've tried the whole X posts to access downloads, god knows how many times. It fails.
All it does is increase spam, and piss members off. tongue.gif

Maybe for new members, they should make a 3-4 sentence minimum for each post or maybe even a paragraph. That should help if the administrators would be able to do that... but they probably can't. Or right now, we should just delete all of the inactive members with below 5 posts... that would be smart. Also, the 3-4 sentence minimum would probably work wonders... you never know.

Yeah, probably. Unfortunately, we need to have bug reporting available for every member to make it work. 1we8.gif
