TAB is always a good way to start out, but don't use it as a crutch for too long. The best advice I can give is to learn how to read real music.

lol, here's what my tabs look like...

think you'd want to try and get music from that?? XD
my music all has lyrics along the side which i'm supposed to sing, but I haven't tried. I think it might be a little difficult trying to read the music score, play it, read japanese lyrics and sing them in tune and in rhythm with what I'm playing...

To be honest, you don't need to learn how to read music to write your own. As long as you know how to play your song chord/tab wise, you're good.
BUT, you DO need to learn how to read it if you are going to get really serious in to this. Don't expect to take any college classes or anything in music if you don't know how to read it!
I should major in music but I already know pretty much everything. Haha, sad but true. I started writing marches for the military band at our high school whenever I was in 9th grade.

well, it's how you play the sanshin. lol
guitars have those weird guitar tabs which I don't understand, and the sanshin has weird kanji tabs with weird hiragana lyrics which I suppose most of you wouldn't understand... XD

I bought a keyboard a couple years ago. I can play twinkle twinkle little start and Unholy Confessions. I can't read notes though
I used Guitar Pro for it, it's a nice program, you should download it. You can download songs for it and it shows you how to play them

I love bass....bass is the best insturment, by far...I started playing upright recently to further my knowledge.
I practice bass when I'm at work....usually about 6 to 14 hours out of the day (there are a few hours when my boss is in and i cant play it in front of him.
My influences are Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Sheehan, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, and Frank Zappa. I could go down the list, but anyways, I'll continue my pro bass stance.
Bass not only requires you to keep a better since of time than the drummer, if you really want to be a great bass player you should be able to do that AND keep a better melody than the guitar. Thats why I have reason to conclude its the hardest insturment out of any conventional rock band out there, and why I think everybody should pick up a bass at some time, whether its to help build a sense of time or to understand the essentials behind a good guitar player.
Tony Iommi would suck if there weren't Geezer.
Nuff said.

And to the OP: Don't get discouraged starting out. It may feel like it doesnt vibe at first but youll get better by 6 months into it and be able to learn quicker.
