Hi, I got 2 computers, both running the same xp (XP PRO SP2) and one of them has broadband (adsl, and the modem ISNT wireless). I want to connect them both, so they both can connect to the internet off the one connection. Also, I want them to be connected by lan, so I can play lan games etc. between them both.

If anyone knows what to do id appretiate it biggrin.gif

    How close are the two computers to each other?

    Sounds to me like someone needs a router. That basically splits your connection right after modem. If the two are close together you can hardwire it, if necessary you could go wireless.

    Only needs a router if he wants to go wireless. Otherwise, a cheapo netgear switch will be just fine.

    the best option, or cheapest option?

    Best option? Get a router (maybe wireless for the future) and just connect like this:

    cable modem -->Router -->comp1
    ................................ -->comp2

    If you want to go wireless, you need a router.

    if you only want to get the two connected and on the same network, a switch is fine. You connect them by running a cable from your modem to the uplink port on the switch and then connect the two computers to two of the other ports on the switch.

    Here's a good example of a switch. You can usually get them much cheaper if you look around on the net.

    edit: Here's froogle results

    thanks for clearing that up, but if i used a wireless router, would it be the same as the switch, just..no wires? i just put the usb cord from the modem into the router and then it sends the internet to both computers? wouldnt they need a wireless card or something, also how would I make the 2 pc's have lan and...lol im asking a fair bit here..wouldnt wireless be slow? or if the computer is only 7m away would it be just about normal.
