Sorry if you're a regular in the Life of Ali due to being one of the privileged few I chatter to on MSN, you've probably already heard this. tongue.gif

I'm about to start my 2nd year of university and filling in rather a lot of paperwork so that I can apply to spend my 3rd year abroad because I'm sick of England and have realised I have very little keeping me here. And it's either I do this or I run away and live on the streets of Canananada. I've been trying to sort it out for a couple of weeks now and am getting nowhere fast so you kidz are going to help make the decision for me.

Basically we have links with various other conservatoires and I need to pick 3 of them to put on my application form for reasons that I don't understand. I've got as far as choosing my 1st choice and after that I'm rather stuck.

So here's the list of places I can go to:
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Brussels, Belgium
  • Cologne, Germany
  • The Hague, Netherlands
  • Karlsruhe, Germany
  • Malmö, Sweden
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Paris, France
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Salzburg, Austria
  • Stuttgart, Germany
  • Utrecht, Netherlands
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Boston, USA
  • New York, USA
  • Rochester, USA
  • Brisbane, Australia
  • Sydney, Australia
So accepting that I'd probably quite happily kill somebody to be allowed to go to Paris Conservatoire, somebody make a case for 2 other options? (And before you say it, bear in mind that I'm not going to Amsterdam for the drugs or Sweden for the girls. tongue.gif ) I've looked at the website of the actual universities about 20 times each and have no apparent preference after Paris. I'm vaguely against the idea of Australia but it's just the journey there affecting that. tongue.gif

Oh, if I go to Europe I only go for 3 months, if I go to the USA or Australia it's a whole year.

Somebody make the choice. Or if you don't want to make my life decisions for me discuss: languages, living abroad or how much university paperwork sucks.

    If scenery is of any importance, I was in Rochester, NY, this summer, and it was the mot beautiful place I have ever been. That is such a nice area.

    Personally i'd go to USA somewhere or Australia. I'd choose Sydney first and then somewhere in the US i guess. I've never really thought about going on a year abroad, perhaps it's time for some change...

    USA, is a nice to play. But if I had to choose, i'd go to australia, especially Sydney. I had a few friends that were from there, and from what i've heard it's great. There's alot of hot girls there, but I doubt that plays out alot to you.

    Wow Ali, this sounds fantastic!!!! i am ultra impressed

    Of the european destinations here's my top 3 in order

    * Prague, Czech Republic
    * Vienna, Austria
    * Paris, France

    I used to hate paris, but that was back when i had no money and had hitched around the farmlands of france and really loved it, and altho i was warned about the arrogance of the parisiens, nothing quite prepared me for the reality of it. Now, going with a few pennies and more of an understanding - it's beautiful.

    Prague is an amazing place, and i would say to anyone go, and spend a week there, get an underground ticket, and explore everything within the underground limits, you will see culture to rival some of paris, music of true genius, timeless archetecture (well if buildings interest you, there's at least 3 weeks of tourism there), museums of art/culture/music/war/peace/modern life... and there's also the amazingly cheap beer and food!!! and if you like countryside, they have some of the most amazing central eastern european villages (think walled towns with a castle in the middle surrounded by amazing forrests and hills) - also there's very ceap flights back to the UK if you want to pop back for the weekend - if you were going for a year, you may get bored with the place tho as it's not got the variety of Paris.

    Vienna is just somewhere that i would have loved to spend longer in, it's on my list to visit again, i wish it could be for a few weeks to see more than just the tourist bits.

    as for the others, i would have to say go Sydney - i'm planning a big trip to Oz next year, and that looks a superb place, plus i have a friend there who says it's an amazing place to live in.

    * Sydney, Australia
    * New York, USA
    * Boston, USA

    failing that new york probably suits our UK stance on things and to spend a year there sounds amazing.

    Ooh, thanks Mumei, you're so useful. happy.gif

    I've already definitely settled on Paris as one of my choices, I've done it on the cheap a couple of times before and adored it. I'm good enough at French that it shouldn't pose too many difficulties and the Conservatoire is truly incredible so basically everything about it is happytimes. biggrin.gif

    I figured I'd put Paris, another European choice and then an American/Australian choice although I'm getting more and more tempted to use both my other choices on American/Australian schools. The journey to Australia actually terrifies me, can't begin to imagine travelling for that long! It was part of the reason I posted though, I thought somebody might have a fairly strong opinion about the American/Australian cities that could be helpful!

    Funnily enough, I was considering Prague and Vienna more than the others for my European choices anyway. tongue.gif I quite fancy the idea of Prague, largely because I'm a language whore and I've never considered learning Czech before. tongue.gif Although apparently the Academy there are very happy to teach me in French, possibly even English depending on who my violin teacher ended up being and how good they are with the language. I only get 3 months in any of the European cities, boo hiss.

    Put Sydney, Australia, Paris, France, and not sure what else.

    Australia is really nice though tongue.gif That's the only reason I put it on the list I know nothing about schooling there tongue.gif

    New York, is also an amazing place. There's a ton of things to do there, and of course overall the food is the best there out of places in the US.

    I think you would love it in prague - there is obviously a rich musical heratige in and around prague, i found language to be no problem at all, even when i was out in the sticks at a local pub you had the choice to try your czech out, or ask if they could help (the people are so friendly and couldn't help enough, plus, i have a few contacts there i could tap to point out a few nice places you would be intrested in visiting)

    Personally i would go to Oz and Syndey because a) it's a year b) it's an amazing place c) it's supposed to be a great place to live and enjoy life d) you get to work on a tan e) you may be able to work a gig at the opera house!!!

    Stick with Parii. Australia's too close to the equator. I'd be melting everyday.

    You can find a guy with a moustache and talk about cheese all day.

    I reckon you should go to Amsterdam and Sweden, mostly for the drugs and the girls tongue.gif

    Seriously though, Prague would be awesome, and so would Austrailia. You live in England, why the hell would you waste such a good chance going to places in europe, especially as it becomes 3 months instead of a year. Use this chance to get as far away from this hell hole as possible tongue.gif Paris can be an exception ofcourse if it's somewhere you particularly want to go.

    Write down the names on a piece of paper. Close your eyes and slam your finger down, wherever it lands you go. Obviously the first time you always think "hmm one more" so the second time should be final. smile.gif

    go to google images, and type the places into it - see if any of them jump out as "yes, i want to go and experiance that"

    BTW (when doing paris, make sure you do paris france otherwise you get some unsightly 'blonde' cluttering your screen LOL)

    if after doing that you don't want to be in sydney right now then it may not be the place for you LOL, i'm certainly wishing i was there right now
