They make a ton with Adwords and they offer paid services for a lot of their basic free services such as Google Apps and more storage for Gmail.

The more you use Google products, the more inclined you are to try their search. I forget what that strategy is called but Apple uses it too with the iPhone and iTunes.

It was a company called GrandCentral which Google acquired. Their service allowed you to manage a single number but have your phone calls routed based on various constraints like time of day or day of the week. Pretty cool service. When I found out about it, Google had already acquired it and was converting it into Google Voice. I'm now waiting for my invitation :p.

I use GOOG-411 about once or more a week. They have all the features of your phone company's 411, but free.

    (1-800-4664-411)

It's excellent, and they'll even end you a text mesage with the information you requested... plus it doesn't cot $1.50+

Aha! I got my invite yesterday, and I've been playing around with it. It seems like a really good system, but my only complaint is that you can't call directly from the page, like Skype does. Instead, when you call someone from the page, it calls your phone, which then connects you to the person you're trying to call.

A major plus, though, is that calling in the US is free, and texts are free. Plus, typing is faster than texting. And the whole voicemail transcription thing is pretty cool too.
