I thought you meant a pimple, from the title :)
Nothing like the feeling of a volcano spurting goo, or a pimple.

Well they are magnificent, creative and destructive. powerful, beautiful, majestic and inspiring.

I grew up here on this active island and I know the dangers, I have seen unbelievable acts of nature and they just fascinate me.

so much power and so much potential.

Earthquakes are much, much worse...volcanoes have benefits like geothermal energy and fertile soil and are generally not very destructive.

True...I live right on two fault lines and were supposed to be expecting a huge earthquake in the next 10 or 15 years.

But volcanoes can also be destructive from lava to lahars and ash.

I'm in California, but I've only experienced one earthquake ever, and it was minor.
I've slept through a few though, but again those were barely perceptible.

I almost made this post. I mean really I think I typed this.

Anyway, it turns out volcanoes are useful in other ways: Link@The Guardian
I take this as evidence of the closed circuit idea. Earth is a single biosphere on some level. Evolution has ways of countering the effects of the Earth (call it Mother Nature, Gaia, or geological formation). When the environment was too heavy with CO2 for life to come ashore, plants took over. Most land animals breathe oxygen, while plants breathe our waste product CO2. I think its funny that even though the volcano belched out this huge cloud of CO2, it actually drastically reduced the amount of CO2 contributed to the atmosphere for a period of some days by way of the airplane groundings.
