so my buddy was PCSing (for those of you non-military, he's transferring to another base), and we ended up having a farewell lunch at Golden Corral.

awesome. haven't been there in forever.

i sit down, and take a massive bite of their pot roast, and suddenly, realize: i've taken too big of a bite.

well, the chunk wouldn't go down. and strangely enough, it wasn't lodge in a way to stop my breathing, but it *completely* stopped me from being able to swallow. i literally had it "stuck in my throat"

so i do the most logical thing, drink some water, maybe i can wash it down?

no. the water hits it, and shoot back up, suddenly i find myself running to the bathroom to spew out this phlegmy water.

so i then do the second most logical thing: gag myself.

so i lock myself in a stall and begin shoving my finger down my throat. spit. dry heave. phlegm. rinse. repeat.

i'm in the bathroom for about 15-20 min before i realize this isn't going to work.

keep in mind, i can still breathe fine, i just can't swallow, and my throat is beginning to get *really* sore by now.

i go outside and grab a buddy "hey, i need the heimlich"

he comes inside and begins to bear hug the shit out of me, causing my chest to bruise, and the food to remain. this isn't working, and i've had this shit in my throat for almost 30 min now. we gotta seek professional help.

he races me to the ER, with me dry heaving every quarter mile.

we get there, i'm still heaving, and the doctors and nurses see me. after a few minutes, a nurse comes in with this stuff she says "it's mainly used for diabetics, but it also helps relax the esophagus, maybe it'll help it pass." so she shoots me up with this stuff, and about 10 minutes later, i'm gagging myself again and "PLOP" out comes this (i swear to God) 3 oz. hunk of meat (make an "ok" symbol with your hand... it was roughly that big). i'm like "holy fuck, really?"

so yeah, long story short, i have more respect for women, because i gave birth through my mouth today...

Every now and then that will happen to me, but to a much less-serious extent.
I've never had water shoot back up though.

Unless he broke a rib he was doing the Heimlich wrong

Or maybe not. It seems some people are saying it only fractures while others are saying it shouldn't do any damage.

    Hrm

Glad to hear you're alright though

Chest compressions can still assist in the choker's attempts at clearing food.

If the compression assistance does not work, AND the airway is completely blocked, find someone strong enough to crack a rib (chest will compress further, allowing more external force on the diaphragm)

Last resort: tracheotomy, but I would hope this is included in the Army's First Aid Training.

Of course since he could still breathe, their method was best.

mr. hobo: you are correct, more than likely if heimlich is done right, a rib will be cracked. however, i can attest he was *probably* doing it right, because, although nothing is cracked, my chest is still very sore.

however, how the heimlich actually works is that if you're actually choking (i.e. your airway is obstructed), then the heimlich will force what remaining air from your lungs out, pushing the obstruction.. "unfortunately", this was note my case, so although i thought it would help, he probably could've compressed my chest to a singularity and it wouldn't have helped. :p

what the people at the ER told me, was that if the muscle relaxer didn't help, they were going to sedate me and scope my throat to try to pull it out. lol

Luckily you could breath. This has happened to me once where it wouldn't go down, but I could easily cough it up still.

I thought it looked like a tool that an overzealous doctor might use to grab things out of your throat :3

So... did you go back and finish the roast? :p

Seriously though, that story really sucks. At least you were around enough people so if something worse had happened you would have been fine... hopefully. O_o

No kidding. I mean, I get that he/she's new here, but necroing is frowned upon on most boards ;)
