Back story: An 88 year old woman best known for her work on the Golden Girls is subjected to a sudden rise in popularity thanks to a facebook group that demands Betty White to be on SNL.

For some reason the group continued growing and the support seemed massive for this movement. Lorne Michaels finally caved and she was the host of last night's show (along with musical guest Jay-Z?)

There's a couple questions I would like to pose about this oddity:

1. What the fuck is wrong with the internet? She's 88. Wouldn't it have been better to get her on a non-live show? That week of rehearsals is tough.
2. If you saw the show last night, what was your opinion of White's performance? I admit I wasn't expecting gold, but the show wasn't that bad.

I was specifically looking for the "old lady swearing" comedy stereotype, but I don't think it was in every skit. There were, however, a bunch of lesbian jokes. I'd say more lesbian jokes than swearing.

"you can put a dress up a lezzie and what do you get? a lezzie in a dress!"
"my muffin is moist. Its even moister when you eat my muffin right!"

I thought it was great--I really wish SNL would have more "wtf, that person is still around?" guests on, instead of whoever is the popular celebrity of the day. I'm glad the show has gotten a bit more wind in its sails the past year or so--I definitely had lost interest for quite a long time in the 2000's.

I only watched up to Jay-Z's performance, but I thought she did alright, considering her age. She didn't really get into the groove of the NPR skit; I can't remember the last NPR take-off apart from the one in the Christmas episode, but don't they generally have all the actors do the (accurate) bored voice? And in the Mexican talk show skit her lack of accent really stuck out. But she was hilarious in the MacGrueber and lesbian skits.

I thought she did an amazing job and it was pretty awesome as an all around show. Put this episode next to the one hosted by the blubber face whats-her-name from "Precious" and tell me who's worthy of my time. Of course ever since I saw Lake Placid, I've thought Betty White is bad ass. She's a special kind of old person. Like Abe Vigoda.
The only thing that disinterested me was Jay-Z's first performance which was a little long, but I like the Neeeeew YAAAAAWK part so...
It was nice that all the other women from past seasons came on for Mother's Day.
